That's bullshit. If Glaxosmithkline cannot tell me their pills cure cancer and make my dick grow an inch a year why can a church say similar things? Lying to consumers is not free speech and that is exactly what churches are doing.
That's funny because a buddy of mine's grand mother was taken for everything she had by a nigerian scammer. She shot herself in the head the next year. I bet this shit doesn't happen in churches because the churches are always there to pat these poor SOB's on the back and say "It's all right, we love you. God loves you. Give us a little bit more."
Can you prove to me religions are lying? (OK for some ridiculous claims you can but for most of them you can't, it's vague stuff beyond testability)
Religion also can't really do direct harm in the same way pills can. Indirect harm maybe if someone chooses their faith over medicine or something but not direct harm. Pills need to be rigorously tested and regulated or you get shit like the thalidomide scandal.
Because you can't prove that what the church says will happen doesn't actually happen. You can prove that the pill didn't cure your cancer or make your dick grow an inch per year. Churches may say "we can help you find salvation" and you wouldn't know if they actually were saved until they're dead, but then you can't speak to them because they're dead.
I only agree with half of your premise. If they are claiming your money today equals salvation tomorrow, I almost think that's fine. Not quite, but we can't prove it's fake, and if someone wants to believe it, well sorry for them, but no skin off my teeth really. It's everything else. They claim money today equals money tomorrow. They promise money today will heal cancer tomorrow. They assure people that money today will mean happiness tomorrow. It's those concepts I have a huge problem with.

Because you can die if you take pills without knowing what they are, the worst thing that happens here is you lose money.

Plenty of pills do no harm and also don't cure shit. Same track record as religion.
