Update: He started acting normally again and started opening his eyes properly. I think they were just irritated by something. He's going to the vet on Friday so that we can make sure. We didn't think it prudent to take him in same day once his eyes went back to normal, and the vet agrees. He's back to acting like his happy, goofy self. Thanks for the advice.
My dog has diabetes and cataracts. He is blind. Late last night he started wincing/closing his left eye. This morning he is having trouble keeping either open. He doesn't seem to be scared or in pain. He's acting normal otherwise, or as normal as a blind dog can act.
Yesterday I fucked up his evening insulin shot. He jerked back and I wasn't sure if I successfully injected any at all. His fur was wet and he smelt like insulin, so I knew at least some didn't go in. I didn't want to give him too much, but I didn't want to give him none, so I ended up trying the dose again. He pulled back again. His fur was wet in the new injection spot again. Fearing an overdose, but also fearing that I didn't get any into him at all, I gave him a very small dose that I was 100% sure went in. I proceeded to do an extra urine test late last night to determine his blood sugar. It was higher than it should have been, which leads me to believe that I was right about my suspicions that I didn't get enough into him. He normally doesn't freak out for shots, so this isn't a typical occurrence. He gets one twice a day and he tends to be calm about them.
I've tried flushing his eyes out with water. I've tried gently pressing on his cheeks to get a better look. No luck.
I'll be calling the vet first thing tomorrow, but they're not open on Sundays. I just need to know if I'm doing something wrong.
Could this be a symptom of an insulin overdose? Or is it a symptom of an underdose? Could it be entirely unrelated to the insulin? He's showing no other symptoms of an overdose. He isn't drinking an abnormal amount of water. He isn't disoriented (or more disoriented than he normally is--again, he's blind). He isn't unusually lethargic.
This creature is my best friend. I've had him for 10 years. If you can't tell by the fact that I'm willing to give him shots and collect his urine multiple times a day, I would do just about anything for the fuzzy little bastard.

I think he freaked out about the shot because a few nights back when we gave him a shot we did something wrong. We're not sure what. Perhaps we went too deep, or we caught a nerve or a bruise. But he yiped for the first and only time that evening. He's been a little skiddish since, but he's only jerked away once, and that was last night. He was fine this morning, shot-wise.
