Well, it's been going on since 2017. Charlottesville set the precedent that web hosts can refuse to provide service for your website if it has content they disagree with. You always have Tor though. Although it's not immune to DDOSing. I also remember when the Daily Stormer moved there that the Tor project was cutting off nodes to the website, so Weev had to go on Gab and find some custom peer ones to host the website. Not only did we just lose social media, but we also lost the entire clearnet. Much like how ISIS' rise to popularity in 2014 was through Twitter until they got banned, moved to Telegram in 2015, got kicked off from there too and are now moving to other places, like Hoop, TamTam, RocketChat or Element. While that does mean they're harder to track, but it also means that they're harder to find, organize, unify and recruit. Same with us. Pretty soon 4chan will be gone, this site will be gone, and so on. So long as current trends continue and especially if Section 230 gets repealed, we might have to say goodbye to user-generated content as a whole.
