Whether or not I agree with what you say, if I find it offensive, or is deliberately hateful to incite a response, you should have the ability to say those things.

Freedom of speech is not protected on a private website, but any website that does restrict liberty will end up losing its users. Voat would be no exception, and I agree it's why we left reddit in the first place.

[–] gatordontplaythatsht 3 points 41 points (+44|-3) ago

Awesome, that's the attitude we should all take. I for am not racist, nor do I take issue with African Americans, but I'll be damned if the hate subs should be silenced simply because it offends me, that goes against everything I've learned.

Exactly. People have a right to be assholes.

[–] bill.lee 12 points 7 points (+19|-12) ago

I'll note its a bit ironic that you want to silence her speech though. You have every right to complain but deliberately stretching the rules of this sub and belittling someone for their views strikes me a bit melodramatic.

[–] hypercat 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

Agreed. They have the right to say something stupid, but others have the right to tell them what they said was stupid.

But, you should not be free from being ostracized for it, either.

[–] swingsandroundabouts 1 points 2 points (+3|-1) ago

I'd agree with that too.

[–] wuzizname 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

You have the right to say whatever you want to say, I have the right to be offended and tell you that you're an asshole.

It really is a simple concept. Outside of the exceptions of calling on people to commit violence, or the classic "yelling 'fire' in a crowded theatre" as a joke.

I can tell someone they're fat, they're stupid, they're wrong, they're a bitch or a dick - and conversely I need to expect that I will be told to go fuck myself.

Feelings are subjective, if we need to create safe-spaces to accommodate everyone's feelings we will find that the world will become much smaller and confined and all of this recent censorship to protect people's feelings is really concerning.

[–] Dereliction 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

We're not talking about someone's free speech here, we're talking about someone with the power to censor others while also having an attitude contrary to the central theme of Voat itself.

"She" can say whatever he or she or it likes. "She" probably should not be moderating others ability to do the same.

[–] swingsandroundabouts 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

Think you misunderstood my position. I'm saying that everyone should be able to speak freely and that censorship is wrong.

'Dirty Laundry' of v/AskVoat

Deleted Submissions
Deleted Comments
Banned Users

Edit: I really find quite a few of the deletions problematic. It seems that many were removed solely on the grounds that they contained no question mark, even though they were phrased as a question.

Just from the first page or two (and there are many more like this):
Why do you think our government has started to make living off the grid illegal

I checked those submissions. Most of them were deleted for not having a question mark, which is in violation of rule 1.

Hardly what I would call dirty laundry.

That's a pretty stupid rule for things that are OBVIOUSLY questions.

Exactly. Also, we have free speech here. How do I feel about @she saying this? I feel like its completely her right to say so. The question mark rule has always been here. I get people are going to complain about following rules when it's convenient, but its also valuable to call out the hypocrisy.

I looked through three pages of those deleted submissions and had no problem with any of them being deleted. I think requiring question marks is a pretty reasonable rule.

[–] Rea11yN0tMe 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

In Grammar School yes. However I think reasonable would have been to let the question stand and put a comment in the thread reminding OP and the posters of Rule 1. At the moment this could get buried, however I believe Atko said that sticked comments are coming.

Haha, my first though was "Was it She?". We need an overhaul of the mod system otherwise we'll just go down the same whole reddit and (so I've heard) stackexchange went.

The mod who mods best mods least. Maybe we could have a show hidden content button instead, or maybe an undelete override vote button idk. Maybe have an option for the sub to show with/without moderation to at least limit some of the obvious lies.

Reddit was full of "The mods need to do a better job of not censoring mod critical content and claiming it's for obtuse rule violations."
Later.... "This post was removed for sexism, racism, and/or not containing the requisite number of commas."

While I don't like @she because of comments like this, she is not a level 1 moderator of this sub and therefore has no ability to ban users making her opinion relatively unimportant in terms of the running of askvoat. Therefore I have no problem with her being here. I find it unlikely that she will push an SJW agenda.

/v/she has, and has used, the ability to censor people with dissenting opinions.

Take a look at the top of /v/AskVoat/modlog/deletedcomments. The only possible reason I see for that deletion is 'I don't like this'.

I think it's a pretty reasonable statement, and replying to it by calling the person demented says more about you than them.

But bear in mind 'political correctness' does not mean, and never has meant, the sort of crap that groups like SRS have been doing.

And saying that a person with an opinion that disagrees with yours should forcibly have their subs taken away is exactly what a lot of people here objected to in the first place.

[–] rednirug 9 points 26 points (+35|-9) ago

It's an insane concept what is going on here. Some of the people who think free speech is the most important thing ever are now trying to prevent the moderators from being able to have free speech. Effectively, they are using their love of free speech to restrict the free speech of others. What the fuck guys?

It would be one thing if she implied a desire to make restrictions and act on her beliefs, but she litterally is just saying her opinion. She's probably a college kid who just posted something without thinking all the much about it.

3
22

[–] Truly 3 points 22 points (+25|-3) ago

She made a really stupid statement applying intentions to a whole group of people stating it as fact. Its perfectly reasonable to expect a more level-headed person in control of a major subverse.

It appears she is attempting to gain top-level control of askvoat. Showing/discussing that she is so heavily biased against an entire group of people is relevant considering this information.

I believe any poster should be able to say anything at all that they want, but mods should do their best to remain impartial. Showing you have such pre-conceived notions, lack of understanding on reasoned argument, and silly misconceptions seems like a pretty solid reason to stop someone from gaining control of one of the largest verses.

[–] sneakybells 10 points 5 points (+15|-10) ago

FUCKING THANK YOU.

It felt like I was going crazy. Are we really persecuting people based off their opinions? Unless we have evidence of abuse, it should be irrelevant what mod's opinions are. It's the red scare all over again.

You know how SJWs are these fanatics of social justice (or their perception thereof) that whatever they do does absolutely nothing to advance the cause they purportedly support, and is actually often more damaging to it than most of their adversaries would be, because of the disrepute they bring to it?

Well, voat seems to have plenty of anti-SJW paranoids, for which I think the term “Free Speech Warrior” is extremely appropriate, as they are exactly like the fanatics they purportedly fight.

prevent the moderators from being able to have free speech.

Correct...the moderators do not get to exercise their speech by deleting the speech of others. They're free to comment all day...they don't get to remove the commentary of others.

Especially in what's a mostly neutral sub like Ask Voat...if it's remotely phrased as a question, it should be allowed. The community will kill off bad / circlejerk questions at that point. If you want to hide a hug box sub, then go join one of many new SJW subs that are springing up.

"It's her sub" yeah and that's why we left faggit.com, because sjws took control of every good sub and said "this is mine, if you don't like it then leave" so we did leave, and now we have another faggot on this site doing the same thing and faggots like you making the same argument to support her feeble brain. How about the mods stop being faggots?

[–] Kithsander 26 points -2 points (+24|-26) ago

Seriously, this. The only people I see really crying about "SJWs" are the people who are extremely butthurt that they get called out for their bullshit. The "safe space" mentality goes both ways. SJW's want to talk in a place free of someone saying something they disagree with. The Anti-SJWs want a safe place where they're free of getting called out on their sexist/racist/homophobic/etc nonsense. These are the same types of children, just opposite sides of the coin.

[–] realpatrickstewart 2 points 25 points (+27|-2) ago

Then you have a pretty narrow world you live in.

1
16

[–] Boltbeam 1 points 16 points (+17|-1) ago

Maybe, just maybe, some people don't want their speech censored to abide by political correctness because someone accused them (with shaky reasoning) of sexism. All commentary on how abused that word has been thrown about aside, does this mean that objective information that could be perceived as "sexist" need to be censored? At the end of the day, this wouldn't matter if SJWs didn't try to harass and ruin people both online and off for their hilariously awful views of censorship, and she (the user) is a bloody fucking idiot for putting fault on the people that are getting tired of some self-appointed moral guardians trying to stop discourse.

I don't want a safe space. I want to have a hard time. As someone who's "Anti-SJW," I want idiots like SJWs (are you included in that batch?) to stop trying to impose their safe spaces in every single community they touch without regard for, and with censorship to the people already there. It's not imposing a safe space, it's rejecting colonization.

"The Anti-SJWs want a safe place where they're free of getting called out on their sexist/racist/homophobic/etc nonsense. "

Are you fucking retarded? So the whole reason for Voat mass exodus is because people got "called out"?

How about the whole fucking site hijacked by self righteous bigots with political motivation banning subs left and right? That got nothing to do with it? Fuck off. Go kill yourself.

[–] Fernando_x 2 points 35 points (+37|-2) ago

I never use slurs in my personal life or even in internet. so accordingly to this moderator, I should not be sick of being treated like a baby who should not be exposed to words that could "trigger" me. If you want my opinion and my vote, this moderator should be demodded.

And I think Voat should stablish a transparent method to demod through the users votes. Like at wikipedia.

1
14

[–] gatordontplaythatsht 1 points 14 points (+15|-1) ago

I've just today suggested a moderator voting system once a sub hits 5k users. That eliminates their ability to control any subs they want by brigading and using the request method and protects the users of large subs from being caught in their nonsensical bias'.

1

[–] rednirug 6 points 1 points (+7|-6) ago

So wait, why should she be demodded for voicing an opinion? She never implied any desire to enact rules on what people say. In fact, you guys are the ones restricting what people can say now, because once someone says something you don't like, now they shouldn't be a moderator in your eyes.

2
6

[–] Fernando_x 2 points 6 points (+8|-2) ago

No, the problem is that that opinion, imho, raises a problem of trust. I know the way srs infiltrated and destroyed many subreddits and I cannot longer trust that user after that. Besides that, /u/she/ can continue voicing as many inane opinions as she or he wants. (like fht or any of the other racist or stupid subs)
