Sadly a lot of Australian Aboriginals (particularly younger generations) still living out west in places like Mt Isa, and rural parts of the Northern Territory are extremely alcoholic and there are numerous cases of child molesters. The Government still struggles with ways of helping them and addressing the numerous issues which has been damaging them for so long. Everyone I've known who has lived out there, worked out there, or passed through, sees the same shit and has the same stories. It's bloody horrendous. Besides the odd racist fuckwit, most people want to help and see the communities integrate and thrive. (Most people I know went out as teachers wanting to help etc, came back disillusioned with the whole situation) Sadly, the common theme seems to be a toxic mentality towards outside help and because they are reluctant to branch out this toxic mentality only thrives within the communities.
Probably the worst part which I find disheartening, is the original culture and customs are dying out with the later generations. There are some beautiful historical traditions, culture, stories, and languages which are fast disappearing due to a break in relationships between the younger generations and the elders. (Potentially due to the abuse and other issues)
I don't claim to know all about it, but it is quite sad to see them slowly destroy themselves despite a lot of effort from modern society to reach out only to have the hand bitten and then silently retreat. To see certain communities burn through the goodwill and golden hearts of some of the most generous and caring people I know is quite depressing.
The few Aboriginal mates I had growing up have either committed suicide, ended up in gangs, or fallen off the radar completely. It's just fucking sad. To me, I felt like the younger generations were fine getting along with each other without interference, but both sides are eventually weighed down with the history of different cultures which don't exist any more. I've never seen a truer realisation of "The sins of the fathers, are passed onto their sons."

I just happened to have read a bit yesterday about Margaret Sanger (found of Planned Parenthood). She once famously said that Aborigines were only one step removed from chimps, which resulted in sexual mayhem (paraphrasing).

Probably one of the most bigoted and scientifically inaccurate things I've heard in a long time.
