when I was little I got interested in computers, my father saw that and deiced to set me on a path, so he decided to install Linux on my computer. Ever since then every computer has a flavor of Linux. I learned on my own how to use the terminal, never hit RM*. That was a huge mistake on my end. I learned html/javascript to see if I actually like programming and I did. Now I'm on the final stretch of my CS degree, I don't want to be programming games or apps, I am trying to apply it to Mathematics and Robotics.

I went to uni to study it because I liked maths and computer games. That and I couldn't really pursue my other career. I've worked for a couple of years and I'm not entirely sure I made the right choice.

What was your other career that you couldn't pursue?

I wanted to go into the armed forces as a pilot but a sports injury killed my aspirations. It's nothing major, even now I have days where my knee aches for no perceivable reason and too much physical activity will usually cause me bother for a day or two. I figured back then I wouldn't get past boot camp without being let go.

Yess...I remember those halcyon days before they got 'wise' and had you clear your memory and all kinds of things. Single-handedly helped me pass Calc I

I began learning online to see if it was worth switching my career into. When I got a good enough grasp of code to be able to understand what I was writing, I became hooked. It's like magic or a super power. I use my hands to create powerful and complex programs. It was especially noticeable when I was able to write a bunch of scripts to automate a lot of my work at my last job. I wrote enough scripts to bring a task that normally took 20 hours down to about 8. My boss rewarded me by saying "Cool." I knew I wasn't valued there despite me saving them hundreds of man-hours a year. I found a much better job and said goodbye to them.

That is a huge timesaver. What was the task?

On the flip side I was a comp sci major and had a class on job placement. That class convinced me that I was going to end up programming cell phone towers or car washes for the rest of my life. I ended up with a degree in microbiology, but still do a fair amount bioinformatics/statistics.

Neat. Bioinformatics, I learned something new.
