It really starts prior to the hangover. Drink water while drinking before the hangover starts. For ever 2 or 3 beers drink a glass of water. Also make sure to eat something with complex carbs and protein prior to or early into your alcohol consumption. This will lesson or prevent the hangover in the first place.
If you are already hungover...
If your stomach too messed up to keep liquid down, eat a a couple saltine/soda crackers with just enough water to keep your mouth wet and wash it down. ]A few minutes later after it has worked it's magic, you can move onto getting yourself hydrated again. While water is always a good choice, I make two different beverages based on gatoraide. First 50/50 mix of Gatoraide and Ginger Ale over ice, it's tasty and the bubbles help settle my stomach. Second, Mix a dose of BC powder (aspirin/caffeine) mixed into a bottle of Gatoraide, I find this helps better than drinking coffee.
Once your stomach is keeping stuff down and you are hydrated, eat a solid meal.
After I have gotten a fair amount of water in my system and eaten a meal but still feeling mightily hungover, I'll do something to make myself sweat some of the toxins and junk left in my system from my liver breaking down all the alcohol.

see in the US you've got all this crazy shit like caffiene powder for drinks...
