Forgot about this until right now... When I was in highschool (in North America) I worked in a place where not saying "Hi" and doing small talk every-fucking-morning was considered enough of an offense to call about a meeting. I started making sure that I was never more than 1 minute early, even if that meant walking really slow through -20 degree weather or standing a block away to kill time (and this was when having Snake on your cell phone was considered high-tech)
Of course you have to lie and say everything is OK, lest you want to get dragged into an even longer conversation with the other person. Why even fucking bother asking me? It's apparently becoming a "thing" in Germany too, but thankfully I work with cool people who actually care when they ask if everything is okay, and also don't care if you say you're tired because you were partying the night before.
Yeah, the constant greetings and such are annoying. I'm kinda a low-social introvert so it's tiresome. But my need to be polite means I usually respond. Now I just give the coworker a tight smile when I'm not in the mood. You are right, most of the time, people don't really care to know how you really are and I'm usually not in the mood to explain LOL.
