Elders don't deserve respect by default. They don't get to tell you what to do. You have a basic amount of respect for human beings, and then if they want more, they need to earn that shit, regardless of age. If they are dicks to you, guess what they don't get respect.

This also applies to people's jobs. Just because you think you're hot shit with your big fancy job titles doesn't mean you instantly gain respect. If you're a dick I will still think you're a dick if you become pope.

Respect can also go into the negative and it's hell earning enough to get back to positive.

Yes but we should still have patience with the elderly. The saying shouldn't be to respect your elders but to have patience with them. Old age can mess with your head and new ideas can come very quickly. That being said if they aren't being patient with you...

agreed, I'm talking about when they think that just because they are older they can tell you what to do. I'm an adult, I don't need you telling me I shouldn't be disabled or that to be a complete woman I need to have kids. These are things people have told me.

My golden rule is: everyone is respected at first until proven otherwise. For elders, they had experienced live more than I do and that experience will be valuable to share. I won't mind when they give advice to me. But when they start to act childish and using experience as argument, they start to losing the respect.

This should apply to parents as well.
