This is why I tend to argue that the upvoats and downvoats should be built into the algorithms based on how they are used, not their philisophically intended purpose.

As long as 10+% of people use upvoats and downvoats as "agree / disagree" or "i like you / fuck you" they simply can not function as a "good content / breaks the rules or doesnt contribute" buttons. It simply can't work.

This issue will never be fixed by trying to tell people to use them correctly. The only viable option is to treat them how they are realistically used and balance the system around that.

You can't control people, as reddit has shown. So I agree with you that they need to be used in kind to balance it out.
