The problem with reddit seemed to be that nobody understood if you don't like something, don't look at it. I don't like racism, so I will not go to those subverses if they pop up. I don't like shoata, I don't look at that. If you don't like something, don't look at it.

There should be a block option for individual posts to help out with that.

Easier said than done. I don't block stuff cause i perversely enjoy seeing inappropriate or incorrect ideas that challenge my view of the world. But those who do still can't avoid it.

/v/news for instance has loads of top rated posts by racists. And I don't mean people implying or even saying offensive things about minorities. I mean people who are mods of literally racist subs. They then bring the comments section in a direction of "F- these people for existing amirite?" If that's your cup of tea, you can't really avoid it and eventually you will take your eyes off the site entirely.

See while I agree with that principle and I had no problem with 'politically incorrect' content on reddit, the problem on voat is that it's drowning out other content. I was subscribed to fatpeoplehate on reddit because although I don't really hate fat people I enjoyed checking it out every now and again for a quick laugh, I had to block fatpeoplehate on voat within about 5 minutes of registering because almost the entire front page was FPH. Similarly I don't really like the social justice movement but it gets very tiring when every comment section on voat contains whining about feminism or women or black people etc. and I often have to scroll very far down to see any real discussion of the topic at hand.

Yeah I've been lurking for a while and finally got registered today, noticed this as well. I guess the trick is to stick to smaller subs for now, and hopefully things will quiet down over time.

Sure, it's more prevalent as those users trickle over from Reddit. However, I just don't care. I don't involve myself in those threads. I recognize that it isn't constructive to do so. From the comments I've been reading here over the last month, I feel that there are a great deal of level headed and mature individuals, in spite of any hate there is. Immaturity is fleeting and those users will move on, I bet.

FPH bans people who are overweight. By their rationale you shouldn't be speaking there if you are fat. That makes you a hypocrite. They happily unban users that demonstrate a healthy weight.

Edit: also the point of their community is kind of to circlejerk about hating on fat people. If they want to be militant in their enforcement of their circlejerk then who cares?

[–] HST 4 points 17 points (+21|-4) ago

They can't ban people site-wide though. They just can't handle dissenting opinions, so they ban people who think differently. Voat itself isn't an echo-chamber, but subverses can choose to become echo-chambers.

Others are also free to create a subverse similar to the standard FPH, but without the bans.

FPH is not a freedom of speech platform and we have never said we were...

[–] ChillyHellion 2 points 2 points (+4|-2) ago

I could literally make a sub called /v/onlycommentmeep and ban anyone who doesn't comment "meep". You're free to participate in that sub, block that sub from view, create your own sub called /v/onlycommentmerp and only comment "merp". The beauty of Voat's system is that filtering power is in the hands of the users, not the site. If you don't like the way /v/fatpeoplehate runs things, you can easily make your own subverse with different rules. But /v/fatpeoplehate isn't going to be blocked site-wide just because some people don't agree with its content or rules.

OP's question never implies anything about silencing or censorship.

People are quick to use freedom of speech as an excuse to deflect criticism. A lot of people here don't seem to understand the concept of freedom of speech.

True, as a law that can be enforced with the powers of government, "freedom of speech" only applies to the government. But as an ideal, as a value that people hold dear, and as a policy that many members of Reddit were led to believe would be honored, freedom of speech can and did and does apply to many areas of life that have nothing to do with government.

So while it's true, of course, that a private company, or any private individual or group, is not required by law to uphold the standard of free speech, it's equally true that those to whom free speech is an important value will be unhappy about this, and will protest this, or take their business or companionship or contributions elsewhere.

And this is what is happening for some vis-a-vis Reddit. Redit is not legally required to uphold the principle and practice of free speech, but when it doesn't--a certain portion of their members will find this so distasteful, that they will seek out other places to go. Remember: Things are not always "either-or": The practice of "freedom of speech" may only have legal ramifications when dealing with government actions--but it may have social and business ramifications even when dealing with private corporations or individuals.

[–] zambeezy 7 points 40 points (+47|-7) ago

Probably not. I say that because what many Voaters call "racist" is simply discriminatory or stereotyping. I would venture a guess that very few people actually think one race is better than another and that's what constitutes racism. Saying "I bet that mugger was black" isn't racist, it's a comment based off stereotypes and, perhaps, statistical probabilities.

How many of you would rather live in a black neighborhood than a white neighborhood? Wait... no body?

Well then I guess we're all racist. The difference between me (Yeah, I'm racist) and most of you faggots is that I'm not ashamed of what I hold to be true. None of you would gasp if I said blacks are bigger, stronger, and more athletic than other races because the numbers speak for themselves. But if I say Blacks have a lower IQ than any other race of people, you all would start to cry and pout about racism and whatever the fuck, even though the numbers speak for themselves. Seriously, go look at the statistics and stop being afraid to question your PC brainwashing. Black people suck, I don't want to live around them, and I don't want my tax dollars supporting their welfare gibs me dat sorry asses.

There is a difference between lacking the intellectual fortitude to dig to the meat of why you wouldn't want to live in a black neighborhood and just being "Yo. they're black", be racist bro, do you, but for fucks sake you need to learn to think a little better. I'm not a racist but I can recognize the correlation between poverty and violent crime, thus I wouldn't want to live in a black neighborhood because they're typically poor.

Well yes. In London half of muggers are black young men but black young men make up about two percent of the population.

Racism is discrimination based on race. It's a sub category of discrimination.

0

[–] zambeezy 0 points 6 points (+6|-0) ago

Racism: The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.

Some of the people that they are hating on aren't even fat. One was a slightly plump girl with huge boobs. Something is wrong with them.

I have an imgae in my mind of some acne ridden teen sitting around in his grubby underpants when I think of them.

This is exactly what I thought. You can take any group of people and there are going to be racists. So what? There's a difference between having racist opinions and actually treating somebody differently because they are of a certain color. You can be racist against black people but still not believe that they are all bad people. Just like most things, it's a generalization. People who use hyperbole know they are using hyperbole, you don't have to tell them.

Also: Voat will NEVER be racist. Some people in Voat may be racist but Voat itself doesn't encourage racism.

Yes, sorry, but we all have to be racist now. I don't like it any more than you do. All that remains is to decide which ethnic group you want to arbitrarily hate. We're doing it by drawing lots. I've just got Tajikistan.

Erm... ok, let's give this a try. Damn Tajiks and their economy that is primarily dependant on aluminium production!

Sorry, I'm new to this.

Reddit was a bitter and polarized site where dissenting opinions were scornfully downvoted and spitefully erased, along with a witchhunt against the commenter and their unrelated posting history.

I have voat to be the complete opposite, and I am sure it will stay that way because it has better principles.
