To shut the engine off the "ground" the coil wires to divert the spark to ground. It seems to me that you have a loose ground wire where it partially grounds and the coils are still running at 30% until it chokes out like a corona patient without a respirator.

Check for a black wire on the block and wiggle it. In fact you should wiggle all the wires while it is in the low idle condition. If you make it better it will stall, if you make it worse it will speed up. (remember you are actually shorting out the coils to end their ability to make a spark.)

Probably not a bad magneto? Could the amount of heat be a part of it? She got hot, little small for what I'm doing but like I said, never had a problem before. I'm wondering if I should be waiting longer after doing heavier work before turning it off. I gave it 5 minutes or so.
