I don't have a cucked one but I really like mine. I've only really used one kind of ammo, Just plain cheap lead bullets, and have had very few malfunctions which is pretty good for .22s.
As far as .223 being $1 a round it was ~.16 a week ago for steel cased. You should still be able to find fancy stuff for .35-.50 a round, Which isn't a bad price for what you're getting but you don't need that for plinking obviously.
I've only shot brass before. Will steel jam or is it fine? Do you have a recommendation of where to buy steel .223? If I can pick it up for .16 a round, I would seriously consider getting a 223.
The only real disadvantage I know of is some people claim steel will wear your chamber out faster but the money you save from buying steel over brass would buy you multiple barrels. Besides that I don't think there's any other disadvantages to it as long as you don't plan on reloading.
I would probably wait a couple weeks just to see what happens with ammo prices. A lot of the online stores aren't even selling right now because they're so far behind.

I used to have a Steven's model 200 in .308 and it would jam anytime I shot anything other than brass through it. Russian Amma was guaranteed Jam.

I would keep checking ammoseek https://ammoseek.com/ammo/223-remington and it looks like sgammo.com might start selling again the middle of this week.
