I'm a cyclist, so I can tell you why cyclists ride in the middle of the lane ... sometimes. It's because the lane is narrow, and there is no shoulder smooth or level enough for them to ride on in an emergency, if they have to dive off the lane because some 14- foot wide truck with mirrors that stick out two feet can't be bothered to swing over the centerline when it passes them.
When you're on a bicycle, getting clipped by a car or truck can be fatal. At the very least you are looking at broken bones and lots of blood.
We "take the lane" ... sometimes ... because we don't want you assholes in your cars and trucks trying to squeeze past us where there's no room for you to do it.

If there's a road that requires you to ride in the middle in order to use it Don't you think the right thing to do then would be to take a different Road? You do realize you guys routinely hold up all of the cars behind you don't you? You do realize that comes off as a bit selfish? It's that mentality that everybody has a problem. As long as you get to ride your bicycle that's all that matters. To hell with everyone behind you trying to get somewhere on time.

Are you commuting to and from work or are you riding for pleasure?

Cyclist here. Can confirm. Every cyclist I know has a "that asshole clipped my elbow, sending me flying to the pavement" story. If drivers all played nice and didn't try to kill us, we wouldn't take the middle of the road. Long, straight country roads, we can ride on the right side. Downtown, nope. I'm going to ride slightly left of center of the lane so if you want to pass me you have to actually get out of my lane first.
