Because downvoats don't matter, they mean different things to different people and anyone can give a downvoat once they reach the threshold.

Just because you got one downvoat you didn't understand doesn't mean the community has become hostile.

The trick is to not care and if you are a genuine person with ideas and opinions the upvoats always outweigh the down.

Exactly. Downvoats are here to stay and like it or not people are going to downvoat based on their opinions. Nothing can change that. Just accept that fact and move on instead of being perpetually worried about how others spend their time voating.

Yeah, I'm starting to think that when that "other" site removed the ability to see up/down voats individually, it wasn't because of skewing voats or anything nefarious but actually they were tired of hearing sensitive people whining about downvoats.

I've seen posts were someone would get 100 ups and a few downs and their would be massive edits asking why they've been attacked personally, ignoring the fact that most people upvoated them. It's sad really, and even if I agree with the post and you edit crying about downvoats, you're getting another one.

edit: spelling

Nah, I'm definitely worried. I don't want this place to become another Reddit.

I really don't see it being a huge problem... I upvoat on an opinion-basis mostly... I feel like people who say they don't are being dishonest. Bias is a strong thing

I work with GMOs daily and also have a profound understanding of them that I can always justify with supporting scientific high impact research. I get downvoted if I don't say GMOs are terrible. This includes when I state conservative opinions. Your logic only stands if you fall into agreement with site lines.

I've seen a lot of anti-GMO propaganda being shared and upvoated, but the comments always seem to be better and free from tinfoil hats and mass downvoating.

Of course, someone downvoated you. I think this proves your point.

The problem is that a single downvoat from the first person who happens to visit your comment can bury it, preventing other people from seeing it unless they dig through the thread, scrolling to the bottom and clicking on all the "expand" links.

A better system would be that downvoats don't do anything at all unless: 1) There are at least three of them 2) There are at least 2x more downvoats than upvoats

This would ensure that controversial posts that are receiving lots of support are visible.

I would prefer to get rid of downvotes all together. If it is spam or trolling people can report it as spam and mods should feel for themselves if they would allow this kind of crap or not.

Intresting, I have noticed that I can still see comments up until -5 points. I'm looking at a comment right now with a 0/-3 ratio.
