Archived What are the best history books? (AskVoat)

I've recently started to understand just how important it is to know the real history in order to really understand what's going on today. Especially pre-modern history to understand how Europe got to where (((it is))).
So please recommend good history books along these lines. It can be anything from world history, to the history of an important nation like England or Germany. And by good, I mean based and non-manipulated by (((modern morals))).
