It was, but I see a worrying trend of Reddit like behavior (downvoting things that disagree even if factual, insulting folks when you disagree). Hopefully that will clean up on its own at some point.

The worst, most reddit-esqe threads I've seen so far have been about Israel or GMOs. Happily the political threads are still mostly fairly sane on all sides.

Yeah, I dislike that people will ALWAYS be one sided on those topics. Why can't we just have a responsible use of both things? But noooo, they watched two documentaries on Netflix and now their opinion is the only one that is right, not those who have experienced these issues in real life.

Edit: The downvotes only prove my point. Go back to reddit.

TPP is pretty crazy too.

I just don't get the anti GMO thing, it's ignorance atleast in the UK where they are heavily regulated.

EDIT: I will admit that in Europe we label gmo free food though.

Was reddit anti-GMO, in general? I never heard much about the subject on reddit, honestly.

That isn't really specific to Reddit. That is pretty much how all of the internet is

But it doesn't have to be! Reddit was way more pro-healthy-discussion 5 years ago.

Quit harshing my mellow man. But seriously, yeah I know that is life, but it was nice to not see that for the timeframe it lasted here.

The past few posts about using downvoats for relevancy instead of disliking was met by a huge "f u ill do what i want mentality" the ammount of people on this site who want to use it to dislike isn't insignificant. I wasn't for this before, but i really hope downvoats are taken away.

I work in politics, and I'm so sick of people demonizing others just because they disagree with their opinions. I appreciate hearing the opinions of people whose views are different to mine. Worst case scenario I am more affirmed in my beliefs, best case scenario I am introduced to a new line of thinking that helps me to understand (and sometimes even agree with) the opinion of someone from the other side of the aisle. Civil political discussions are what help to make our country better. Not name calling and pointing fingers.

I like the overall tone of the discussions on Voat. I just hope it stays this way.

This is it exactly. I want to see what the other views are in addition to my own. Hopefully, both parties may learn something. It should be civil either way.

Wow, I just responded to another user saying this exact same thing. I guess for some people, it's just easier to just condemn others as uneducated/stupid/evil than to consider and analyze that others have different potentially valid views

Thank you! In real life having political discussion is usually super calm and enlightening, especially if their views differ.

Are you sure the worst case scenario isn't that you're offended? I've heard that that is the worst thing ever.

This will continue to be the case until Reddit ultimately succumbs to their own demise which is and will continue to happen as they shoot themselves in the foot.

As more people come on, it is important to continue to drive this point home, that Voat does not encourage the use of downvoting the same way as Reddit at all, and that your downvote should be used to keep the subject on point, not to censor opposing thoughts.

Upvoat this to the top. This is the key to keeping this place nice.

Problem is that Reddit constantly stressed the same thing. At some point we have to realize that it's the users -- not the site -- that fuck everything up.

I will agree with you and add that Voat has the right idea by limiting the use of downvotes. Hopefully, that will encourage users to rely on discourse rather than downvoting to hide the opinion of someone they disagree with.

This is going to be difficult, to say the least. IMO, no matter the intentions of an upvote/downvote system, it will devolve to, and be treated as, a point system, where you "win" by being upvoted and "lose" by being downvoted, and you as a reader attempt to make those you support win and those you oppose lose.

Note I'm not saying this is how it should be, but this is IMO the inevitable outcome. Limiting downvotes, however, might have an appreciable reduction of this effect, and it may help discourse with it, especially in terms of limiting the influence of the people who decide to downvote every freaking thing they see.

The more I poke around in the subverses and such the more enthusiastic I get. I am totally fine with people that have the exact opposite point of view from me getting the freedom to speak their mind and argue. I think its great. Circle jerks are boring. This place is not boring.

It's definitely a huge improvement. I'm a firm believer in diverse groups of opinions, especially in politics, and we certainly have that here. I've seen a lot of views expressed here that would have been censored elsewhere, and even though I don't always agree with them I'm glad that they're allowed to speak their minds.

I don't even think censored, most other sites just bury other opinions and in a sense the viewers censor. Just was noticing how much fun it is to see GOOD conversation!

I have been surprised and pleased about the discourse as well. I hope this continues.

As more people come on here, it will get worse, trust me. The majority of people, especially teens, are liberal SJW's and ignorant about reality. Unless Voat does its best to discourage mods from turning into ban happy idiots, it will become another reddit.

I'm actually seeing the complete opposite opinion dominating right now. Even mentioning that "Social Justice" as a concept isn't inherently bad will get you at least 10 downvoats in any thread.

I disagree. I would say that /v/news is heavily left and /v/politics leans to the left with heavy Sanders support. I see a conservative post made once every two or three days and it is usually at 10 or so points. Sanders posts are almost guaranteed to get 200 points at a minimum. If you think what /v/politics threads or posts is right leanings, I think you were on Reddit for WAY too long.

There are some consitant trends on voat. Not as extreme as many sites but they do exist

The support for Sanders is actually a good example of this.I don't believe politics is blocked from all

Only think I've noticed from /v/news is that it's VERY anti-police and VERY anti-GMO.

While /v/politics is pretty left leaning, they're also pretty damn accepting of other views.

It's very refreshing, so far I haven't been labelled a "baby-killer, Government pawn" or whatever have you just for being a Marine or stating my opinion. This community seems to be much more respectful and intelligent, which is how it hope it stays.

I've been called a "Monsanto shill" because I think GMOs can be useful, a "stupid Brazilian" because I think affirmative action should exist to help out students in low-income families/areas, and a ton of other choice words because I'm going to be a dentist and wish to be well compensated for my 8+ years of school.

EDIT: This was all in /v/news though, so I will now be avoiding that place. Other areas seem to be super chill.

Have to agree. I have been into a couple threads with people posting opposite positions, but they seem to be willing to talk and post and not be assholes about it. That makes me want to not be an asshole either. Voat (at least right now) seems to want to keep that "new freedom-of-speech-smell" so we're trying to keep ourselves and others from fucking it up.

Peoples' ideas are not to be invalidated by shouting, banning or reporting if they don't line up with mine. What is the thinking: I may not change your mind, but if someone else steps in and sees our argument, they can at least educate themselves and make up their mind.

I don't understand why people think that is effective in any way. Interactions like that just make you respect their view less.
