The checking your bits page doesn't mention it anymore (which just makes the pop up really creepy). @Atko

SJW's will never stop. Once protection is turned off they will start again. They hate freedom of speech and will do everything to destroy it.

[–] TalkingAnimal 1 points 3 points (+4|-1) ago  (edited ago)

Do we actually know it's the SJWs? I'm all for calling out SJWs on their bullshit, but I'm hesitant to accuse them of things based just on assumptions.

Edit: @TreeWithInfiniteCats is an asshole. Instead of showing me some kind of proof that the SJWs are causing the DDOS (and therefore I would be rightly mad at them), he responded, "Shut up you faggot SJW. Go back to reddit."

He then sent me a private message stating, "You made me mad by being dumb. Please kill yourself. Fuck off or at least shut up and never reply to my comments again."

Is it really unreasonable to say I'm hesitant to accuse someone of something based on assumptions?

Super depressing too, I really like Voat. Guess being open to discussion and all views makes us bad people. Oh well! I'll donate to the Voat cause!

I think they're just scared of another DDoS attack. The current splash screen is just for protection

Either way, everyone I mention this site to has seen that pop up and immediately run screaming. Shit creeps out new users.

Yup, usually when the verification feature of CloudFlare is enabled, it tends to stay enabled after.

That 'Checking your bits' page is the DDOS protection. That overlays the application and checks how many requests are being sent from your IP, if its less then a specified threshold then Voat is not being DDOSed and you are allowed to continue browsing. I would assume that the DDOS is over as Redshit would be wasting their money on a botnet rental with a site that has DDOS protection

I don't think Voat is under attack at the moment, but it could still easily be attacked again. I think the admins are leaving the splash screens up while they make some upgrades to protect the website.

They could easily implement some browser cookies for after you logged in, to prevent the checking bits screen.

Judgin the downvoats some think that's a stupid idea, but I just hate not having a comment saying why it's bad idea.

I believe the problem with that is once a browser gets that trusted cookie, someone could abuse it

[–] gryphongod 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

The best way to ward off scrapers/DOS attacks I've found without impacting your legitimate users is to implement rate limits across all your service endpoints. This way only people who are abusing the service get denied. For something like Voat the limits can be set quite low and most actual users would never hit it.

The problem is cookies are stored client side so they can easily be spoofed for an attack. You can never trust cookies for anything security related, that data is stored in what's called the "session" on the server (which is where your authorization data lives post-login). You can't rely on that for DDOS protection either, because you need to stop requests "at the door" so to speak, looking up session data requires you to perform an action based on a request, which utilizes a small amount of computing power.

Atko and PuttItOut are spending large amounts of money (about 15k monthly - my estimate as per the 'State of Voat' post) to subscribe with CloudFlare for protection against DDoS and SQL Injections, and for acceleration using CDN. They might as well use the full package features 24/7.

They should open a patreon account. Web development and coding is a true artform in my opinion. ヽ(*≧ω≦)ノ

Apparently patreon has issues. I asked this on another post and 8chan had their funds pulled and account closed because someone complained that they were talking about gamergate

I've heard that people can subscribe for a month on Patreon, get all the benefits, then pull out and subscribe at a lower amount.

They might as well, yes. I actually think closing registrations was a good idea for now. The one thing voat has to be is online. Without that, open registration doesn't matter. People can't make accounts if they can't get in.

I don't think they're spending that much on Cloudflare alone. Most of that is for server costs.

It's not a war between men and women as much as it is a war of feminists vs. everybody else.

[–] sckpppt1336 1 points 18 points (+19|-1) ago

It dillutes your message to put men on one side, women on the other, despite the "not all" part of it. The stereotypical SJW make assumptions about the lives of the "persona non grata" they disagree with, so making such broad stroke assumptions do nothing to alienate people that would otherwise support you, and give ammunition to those that want it. You don't fight identity ideologues with identity politics, because they've got homefield advantage there.

Also, the "women don't like speech behind their back" part is pretty much non-applicable when almost all communication here is public for all to see.

Awful lot of generalizations you're making there. An entire gender vs another? What kind of Fox News world do you live in? It's much more granular than that, it's much more detailed. This is the internet, an extension of "real life" where everyone has an opinion and here can be more militant in supporting it.

Just as you caricature your opposition, they do the same of you. I fundamentally agree with you on free speech, and honestly the shocking lack of boundaries that we are being expected to uphold in the name of "not offending". It still pisses me off that I am expected to take care of someone else's feelings. But I don't attribute that conflict to my dick or her pussy. We're more than what's between our legs, and just because you're of a certain gender, doesn't mean you think like the majority in it. Don't be so naive. You could have many more in agreement with you if you stopped playing the stereotype game, naming names, and instead actually got to the root of the issue and proposed a solution that would allow both sides to agree, rather than further drive the wedge that you see.

As a woman who couldn't give two shits about your Internet man caves, fuck off.

Things are shitty for both sides, slightly more for women. We've come a long way and mentalities like this don't help anyone.
