Voat is awesome, I've noticed it feels a lot more fair and intellectual (mostly) than Reddit is. I've had some great discussions here, and the people I've conversed with are great. I look forward to the future!

Same here, I like that being able to re-explain yourself is much easier than on the other site, where your comment may be buried, forgotten or ignored.

In the other place people downvote each other with no explaination. There is less cancer here.

Yeah, I've had mostly good experiences here, as well. It's definitely a more positive and deeper environment.

Although, I would warn against sealing ourselves in an echo chamber. Now that it's invite-by-admin-only that might become more of a problem. I really hope they reverse that decision soon. I see a fair bit of anti-trans sentiment here and it seems difficult to discuss the validity of transgenderism within the scientific and medical fields without angering one or two users. Admittedly, that is also still a problem over at Reddit, as the trans community is still quite 'new' to the world.

I guess the silver lining is that everyone gets to speak their mind here whether you're anti-trans, Christian, Muslim, atheist, gay, feminist, MRA, or a trans individual yourself. I don't have to worry about a mod deleting my comments if I want to criticize the site or a subverse.

I find that here you can have a proper argument without things turning to name calling. People do this magical thing whereby they use facts and opinions to discuss an issue, rather than pointing out typos or questioning the sexual it of your family.

Agreed I've had more had more good discussions on Voat in a month than I have on Reddit for years. Even when its controversial or people disagree, responses are well thought out with their points and people are (mostly) fair when responding.

I agree with your good conversation ratio. The conversations are almost always well though out, like people are actually interested in hearing other opinions and having their own challenged rather than just shouting down dissenters.

We need to always remember that these exact words were written over 5 years ago, but it was on reddit and about Digg.

Well at least we have a good site until 2020. I can't remember what I was watching when I heard this but one of the characters in a TV programme said "you're the next big thing until the next big thing", which fits quite nicely to this situation.

I've not been active yet on Voat but reading is more enjoyable here for sure.

The only problem I'm seeing is that smaller subverses aren't growing. Discussion on larger subverses is pretty constant, but there's no way to get new blood into existing subverses.

i hear you. i have a sub with nearly 500 subscribers, almost nobody comments or voats, and it's beginning to get frustrating. i almost with people would downvoat so i can decide if being the major contributor is worth my time. there are probably 10 posts out of 100 that weren't made by me.

This is what I've been doing with my NSFW subverses. Growth is pretty slow, though.

I kind of try to do my little part here and there on small subverses. So I recommend anyone and everyone to do that if possible. Also, on a higher note, less douch bags, from what I've seen here compared to Reddit

Voat's voating system makes users 'earn' their voating rights. The number of upvoats you can give depends on the your contributions. This gives more value to comments rather than submissions.

It also doesn't automatically give you an upvoat for every comment you write. This is brilliant because it means your comments need to be positive, informative, supportive, or really funny to garner upvoats. So its not about quantity only but more importantly it's about quality.

The voating system also seems to have an added effect; when you have to earn the right to downvoat, you're not so quick to use it.

There was actually another brilliant idea posted to v/ideasforvoat which basically suggests giving a 'cost' to downvoats (say a -1 from CCP). I think implementing this would be the missing piece of the puzzle to make Voat's system complete. It will not stop people from downvoating, but it will encourage them to at least say why they are downvoating in a reply comment. It will ultimately result in more meaningfull discussions with counter arguments.

I know! Same thing happened to me. I almost don't downvoat. It's like people here are part of my community, a downvoat is for someone degrading the quality of this fine site, and for making up look like our this website's enemies want us to look.

The regulars are mostly staying. But it won't last forever. The longer it stays invite only, the more tight knit the community becomes. Without new viewpoints, it will turn into a hugbox.

I know. I guess it is a technical (manpower, storage) thing. If I had a lot of resources and Voat was a competitor of mine gaining fame, I would most definitely exploit their weakness of not having enough horse power to handle the users they seek to take. Creating an army of accounts would be part of the strategy. I don't think that for now stopping new registrations is a bad idea. Just please, get the upgrade before more momentum is lost. The clock is ticking.

It's not like there's only one opinion. The problem is that the dominant one has a lot of hostility, and those spouting it seem to like writing off their opponents as SJWs so they don't have to actually argue them. If it can be ingrained into the community to not behave that way, for example, then I think the formation of an echo chamber can at least be slowed down. Attitudes that put people off of discussion that isn't just agreeing need to be stamped out, or you definitely will have one.

A lot of people stirring trouble really are SJWs. Whether feminists that believe women should have more rights, MRAs, or racists that think affirmative action is a good thing.

Well, it is not necessarily attracting more people, but the users on voat have been consistently posting new content and staying active despite voat being invite-only.

I don't think the intention is to keep it invite only forever, although I maybe wrong.

[–] GeneralBoobington 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

no, it won't be invite only forever. they released a site-wide announcement last week, i believe, stating their servers are just sooooo overloaded and that it's at the point where every click we make costs them a fuckload of money so they just had to stop people from coming in and creating more overload. i think they said they're working on how to fund/funding the cost of the necessary technical components before they re-open to the public, which sucks ass, because I never use a username for more than a month. :-( but it's cool, not everything's about GeneralBoobington, I guess. It should be, though.

I think is that it's invite only because for now it is all they can handle. I think it was the right choice though. I remember one day there were a lot of suspicious posts and comments, a lot of people thought we where under attack. They wanted to make us look like hateful bigots. They made the site invite only a couple of days latter. I don't see those posts anymore.

[–] 1332496? 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

It's a little worrisome the long term though. The problem with "invite only" is new users are going to be skewed towards people actively recruiting rather than those organically finding the site which risks creating a more activist user base. Although that could happen anyway, I think a better plan would be to waitlist new users the way Mailbox did.

For now there's no way to invite. So we're basically a closed forum for the time being.

Voat is an awesome place, filled with awesome people. The creators @atko and @PuttitOut really know how to connect with their user base, I haven't been attack by grammar Nazis or trolls, I have shared my passions, hopes and fears with you goats and have gotten nothing but positive feedback....I love this place!
