What type of use are you expecting to get out of this new machine? That is going to determine more of what you need. As far as brand, if you are not planing to do any gaming on it, I prefer the Dell Latitude series.

Any advice on what to pick if you want to do gaming?

In general I would advise against a laptop for gaming. Desktops = more power for less money. Laptops are just not the best for gaming unless you want to spend a ton of money, and if you do get a powerful one, you will be connected to the wall outlet all the time using it because battery lift is very low.

Mostly admin-type work with MS office suite. Other than that just web browsing/research.

If that is the type of work you are planning to do, I would advise whatever you get to get at least an i5, with an i7 being a better choice. Bare minimum ram would be 8gb but I would really advise 16gb min. Most will probably not need more than that. For the storage I would recommend a solid state drive over a mechanical hard drive. Mechanical drives are slower and prone to failure due to movement. Solid state drives have a much longer lifespan and are way faster. You can ignore the video card all together really. Just about anything should suit that type of work fine.
Most manufactures have a business line of laptops and typically you can get the older gen of machines that is on its way out cheaper than the new line. Dell and Lenovo would really be my only two choices. This is because of general reliability of the units and the warranty repair if there is an issue. Both of these offer next day onsite repair for hardware issues. The other manufactures typically require you send in the device to their repair center.
