I'd recommend Kubuntu 15.04 or Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition for new users, the layout is a lot closer to that of windows and on top pf that, Unity is pretty terrible.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of KDE nor Mint/Cinnamon. My default is Gnome 3 with some extension, but I'd rather use Unity than KDE or Cinnamon. KDE has always felt like it keeps getting kicked out the door 80% done, and Cinnamon feels like it's missing very integral customization options... like really basic stuff like mouse movement and key bindings. KDE also insists on all it's own non-standard apps, K-this, K-that, Konqueror instead of Firefox, etc, etc. I think that makes it even more confusing for someone new to the Linux world when not even the apps are familiar.
