17 year-old here, but I like to think I'm mature. I'm a stupid annoying prick in real life, but I try to be thoughtful and polite on the internet.

Yeah, idk why. I think its because I am more polite to strangers than to my friends. That's how I was raised, I guess.

The mere fact that you acknowledge that and try... something... tells me you're on the right track.

Same here, but you might be in the minority. Although I think people really do exaggerate the differences in ages and how people are; 'summer reddit' and 'normal reddit' to me are mostly the same, and there're nice and annoying people in all age ranges. I dunno, maybe just my experiences with people online. It'd be interesting actually to conduct a poll or something and get a curve of the ages on Voat...

I'm stupid and annoying because I never think things through and take things too far. Sometimes I don't know where to draw the line, and end up hurting people's feelings because of it. Once, for example, I was at a festival with one of my best friends. We got separated by the crowd, and when I returned she was grinding with some guy. After the festival, I started joking about it, but instead of leaving it I kept prodding. It escalated and I ended up essentially calling her a slut. We didn't talk for two months.

I'm a prick because I think about myself more than others. I try to be generous, and I like being generous, but most of the time I don't even think about it and I think it's a bit selfish, even if it's subconscious. I also say rude things to my friends just to see what their reaction will be, and I get a kick out of it.

I don't think I'm a bad person. These are faults of mine, but I try to own them and be the best I can despite them. I (somehow) have a lot of very good friends who genuinely care for me, which is great. I probably exaggerated a bit (though the story is 100% true), but I sometimes honestly wonder how people like me. I guess I'm funny, so I have that going for me.

I dunno. Drop by /v/fatpeoplehate and then consider that same assertion.

Not that adults can't be hateful but, when I go there, I don't get the sense that it is late-20s -50s at the other end of the keyboard.

I don't think you can tell a person's age by whether or not they hate fat people

[–] Kleyno 3 points 41 points (+44|-3) ago  (edited ago)

Oh I agree, which is why I stipulated that adults can be hateful as well.

It is just that the content posted there, and how the hate is articulated in the comments, leads me to form certain assumptions regarding the age bracket of the posters. It could be completely wrong, but there you have it.

It's one thing to be an adult, it is quite another to be a mature adult. Just because someone reaches a certain age doesn't mean that they have the mental capability of the average person of that age.

I think some of the talk about how hardcore they are about fitness and the hair trigger rage are both typical of young people trying to appear hardcore.

[–] bongosilly [S] 0 points 13 points (+13|-0) ago

Of course, there are going to be pockets and subverses that are younger.

I just get the impression the average Voater has a bit more maturity, and is less reactionary.

Well, I've seen quite a bit of non-neutral (i.e. laden) titles that aren't reporting news/etc but push an agenda. Other than that, maybe, yeah.

[–] bill.lee 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

I think that's true. Overall, its been my impression as well. There have been several of the "how old are you" questions and it seems to generally skew toward people in their later 20s.

my guess is its a mix of 17 yo who think they are mature and 20-30 somethings who think they are young at heart (immature). its a cooler crowd than the place we all came from because most of the cancer is still over there... for now.

Older crowds = less ill-informed SJW types as well. Also, a much more mature audience that welcomes a much broader array of content and who won't usually just submit the dribble that is Reddit's front page. Not to mention, most of us older ones really don't like our free speech taken from them, and exercise their freedom of speech more freely, without worrying what others will think.

0

[–] Taurich 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

I think the free speech and older crowds one is an interesting connection. I would agree that younger people are less concerned about it than older people. We live in an increasingly censored world, where EULAs, contracts, and just plain old rules are more prevalent. Even the tech is getting more locked down and constrictive. Compare the freedom of old-school PCs or a Linux system, to say iOS. You get a flat pad that can only use certain apps, you can't access much of the internals, no hardware access and then EULAs that say you won't do certain stuff despite physically owning the object.

I'm admittedly kind of between the two generations and can get apathetic about it, but I think the younger people growing up with pre-packaged tech are conditioned to accept things at face value and stay inside the boundaries of that sort of thing.

I could be way off base on the "why" though.

Good point about the SJW crowd being older.
