Space is an issue, but if you use propane for heat, you can make your set up portable. Better still, however, would be to contact a friend with garage space and make it a partnership. It's actually better to brew with people anyways.

How do you keep it cool over summer time? I live in Texas and I imagine the heat in the garage would not bode well for storage.

So, the single biggest factor in the taste of your beer is healthy fermentation...and that means temp control (not quite the same for distilling).

Here's an easy solution. But a chest freezer and a regulator. Set it to desired temp (let's say 60 degrees. Check with the yeast manufacturer until you start cultivating your own strains) and it'll use just enough electricity to keep it at that temp.
