The nation of immigrants / melting pot meme is a good one.

I still believe in the melting pot idea. The important aspect of that metaphor is the melting part. People can't immigrate whole-cloth and bring their culture with them. People come here, are broken down back into individuals, melting away the shackles of their culture, and then the person - not the trappings of their history, is integrated into America.
I like that idea. And I prefer 'Mutts' to 'Purebreds'. I'm not in panic about 'them' taking 'our' women, because I am going to choose and mate with who I want. [Within reason, Natalie Portman is taken and she's starting to get a little obnoxious anyway]
I don't understand why people don't realize that although racial and cultural hegemony leads to greater peace, it still leads to stagnation and extinction without infusions of new genetic code and ideas.

The idea that America has been a melting pot of non-Europeans since the begining isn't quite right though. The floodgates weren't open until 1965, which is pretty late in the game.
People "melt" better when they're not immigrating by the tens of thousands and forming their own segregated communities. It's easier to achieve that melting pot ideal with less immigration, not more. Migrating families of immigrants makes it harder for them to act as individuals and makes it easier for their culture to migrate with them.
