Yep. Go to a place where consumerism isn't as important, close knit communities, and you'll find much more empathetic people.
Honestly though, sometimes that gets annoying. I like the lonely feel of a big city, where no one cares. You can go about your business, stare at the clouds, sit silently with a book. I find often in those small communities, while they are empathetic, they expect a lot when it comes to interactions and contributions. They're also extremely inefficient.
