To make the world a better place... and possibly make a difference...

Keep in mind although there is a lot of negative news these days the majority of cops are good people.

Also, I am not a cop.

I think it varies depending on where you live. I grew up in a relatively calm community, never even heard of the police being douche bags. I can certainly see why the situation would be different in a rural or urban area, where being a police officer becomes more about power, or when you're in stressful situations every day and it just gets to you mentally.

To answer your initial question, I think people who hate their local police departments are the ones that in a perfect world would want to become police officers. It's almost certain that they would actually care about justice, not just power trips. Sadly, good people only expect good to be done for them.

Couldn't have said it better. I seriously thought I was the minority with this opinion.

I wanted to become one a long time ago because of that, but my interest made me look as many information about police as I could (also personal experience with them) and ended up thinking it's like the last place to go to make the world a better place. The were never meant to do that, just to protect the "1%" from the poor, at least in my opinion.

Now I hate the police even as a concept, but still I make an effort to realize not every one of them is a scumbag.

The negative news makes the news though. In general, people don't want to see headlines about all the good things cops do.

How can the majority of cops be good people when they close ranks around bad cops and ostracise good cops like Joe Crystal so that he never works in any major police dept ever again?

I think you may have a micro view of the police force... I have no doubt that there are bad ones out there. This is made very clear with the news reports. But to say that every cop every where in the country is either corrupt or just evil is just a fallacy.
