I had just finished a two week course in SF and was heading to the airport. I was wired to get home so I was bouncing off the walls. I stopped at a gas station and was rushing to get smokes and chew for friends back home. The older black gentleman noticed my frantic attitude and very slowly said "son, you need to slow down and relax". I disregarded him immediately. Who was he to tell me how to live my life. At the time I was climbing the ladder pretty quickly and doing well for myself. Well, what he said stuck with me. I'd think about it all the time, in my free moments. Not terribly long later I demoted myself and went back to a position that had a schedule I liked. I gave up on advancing my career and have since focused on my personal life. I've never been happier. I've been contemplating going back to SF just to try and track him down and thank him. In some ways, he was more influential on my life than my parents.
