I'm ok with it in its current form, those who earned the right to wield it should be free to do so without impunity. The regulation in effect keeps the new account trolls from spamming posts down. #workingasintended

True, where I'm mostly seeing this though is in political or news threads where there isn't always a right answer. If two or more people want to talk about it, that's great as that's what the site is for! If you disagree with someone, say it. Explain what you think to possibly spark further discussion. Downvoating on topic, reasonable comments isn't going to further discussion and the spread of ideas. In fact, it would probably hinder it.

Perhaps a compromise; something along the lines of you need to have "x" number of comments in that particular post in order downvoat it. Gotta participate in some way before you can help bury it?

The problem with this is that there is a big difference between someone who is clearly trolling (who should be downvoated because they're detracting or at least not contributing) and someone who has a minority opinion. A minority opinion should be evidenced by the lack of upvoats, not being downvoated to hell.

Exactly. I see a lot of well thought out and clearly stated ideas or opinions being downvoated because someone else doesn't agree.

I downvoated this post for two reasons: 1. It is the 100th time I have seen a similar post in the last week. 2. Because I can.

Hey, no worries man. I don't hold a grudge. But we are now mortal enemies and I upvoat you out of spite.

I see your upvoat and raise you.... an upvoat?

First time Ive seen it, so I upvoated to counteract your downvoat. I also upvoated you because I want to remain unpredictable.

I try to stick with this. Downvoats for comments that are irrelevant or don't contribute. If its something I just disagree with I either post a rebuttal, or wait for someone else to and then upvoat them. I completely agree that doing so fosters open discussion rather than pandering. I just hope we can get enough people to do it to make an example, also agree with @wolflink009 that it will probably never happen across the board.

I completely agree that it probably won't ever happen completely and that posts like this may seem redundant, but it is a good thing to be reminded of.

It's a nice ideal to strive for and remind ourselves when we stray but it's never going to happen 100%.

I am in agreement. The only caveat I would add is that if the comment is poorly written or reasoned, or has a lot of grammatical and spelling errors, than I downvote as well. I believe comments should not only be relevant, but also competently expressed. I don't expect the King's English every time, but if I have to read it several times to figure out what you mean, then it gets downvoted.

Isn't that taking away someone's freedom of speech in a way? Like saying you can't express your opinion that you don't like something that's been said? I get down voted any time I say I don't like Matt Smith as The Doctor, and that's their right to express disagreement. Does it suck? Sure, but what's the big deal?

I'm not saying you can't disagree, I'm saying for the same of the new site and trying to make it a good community, it's better to discuss disagreements than to downvoat and move on.

Sometimes the down vote is easier than beating a dead horse with the same comments that have been repeated a bunch of times. I personally like being able to down vote people. That's why i hate Face Book, I can only like stuff, so annoying.

I will always downvote complete idiocy, even if it is an attempt at contributing. But I think it is important to understand that just because someone disagrees with you, they aren't being an idiot. It takes a special kind of stupid to get a downvote from me.

You're right. It is yours to do with as you will. I was just trying to point out how a lot of people came here because they felt their speech would be regulated by Reddit. Now, when we have a near perfect platform for free speech, some are condensing their ideas down to the click of a button.
