Dude just get a .22 - any pellet gun worth a shit will cost the same or more than a .22

two best choices are a Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin model 60.

Get the Ruger if you want a detachable magazine and shit loads of accessories so you can make it look like whatever you want.

Get a Marlin if you want a tube magazine and more accuracy, but not as many accessories.

I have a model 60 because I wanted accuracy. That Marlin micro-grooving does not fuck around. OK, sure so I can't make it look like an M4 - but that fucking thing can LITERALLY drive nails.

My recommendation to you, since you want to shoot critters and not precious antique cans is get the Marlin model 60 with a decent optic and a comfy sling. If you happen to have a .357 pistol already the Ruger 77 is a sweet little gun too, but a .357 coming out of a rifle is uh....well it's not exactly large caliber but it will fuck shit up waaaay more than a .22. So if by "woodland creatures" you mean squirrels - stick with the .22, but if that includes possums and armadillos and maybe a snapping turtle or two, then go for something in a pistol caliber you already own.

fuck the .17 hmr tho, total meme gun.

Accuracy is important, but I only need out to about 20 - 30 yards. Really like to find a pellet gun so I can shoot in the back yard. Budget is of concern too.

Any pellet gun that isn't a toy will cost you about the same as a .22 fam.

If you're that close and don't wanna spend any shekels go get a wrist rocket and some ball bearings.
