Archived I was discussing encryption in another post when I began to wonder something: is it possible to encrypt your entire OS? (AskVoat)

I hope I'm explaining this correctly. Would it be possible to put some strong encryption up around your entire operating system and all of your data therein? Essentially booting your computer up to a password screen for said encryption rather than one for the OS itself?
If not, what's the closest you can get?
