Saying it's a "matter of principle" is a bit hammy, but you know what I mean.
I used to get so frustrated with vote system on reddit that I eventually just decided the best thing to do was try not to pay attention and stopped voting myself altogether.
What I eventually realised though, was that the biggest flaw in the vote paradigm was the downvote button, it serves almost no purpose other than to suppress ideas you don't like for whatever reason.
If there was only an upvote button, the most popular content would still rise to the top, while eliminating the most effective form of brigading: mass downvoting.
After migrating to Voat, I eventually started upvoting stuff I like again as the much smaller userbase and vote activity in general made it feel like i had more of a civic responsibility here to do so.
But anyway, point is, imo, voat would be better off eliminating the dowmvote button altogether, though I doubt it would ever happen.
