Terrence McKenna often described Culture as our Operating System. Looking at it from that perspective, I've come to think of Religion as the Culture's Anti-Virus/Firewall.
Not religion, because religion is subversion, but faith. Faith is the highest form of love. It scares the crap out of them, because people will give their lives in love's name.

It's certainly a purpose viewed from a government's perspective. It's a fine tool, just depends on the job you want to accomplish.
A knife can kill a man, or tournée a carrot. The use of a tool is all about intention.

Pagans: Randomly conquer Judea and sometimes expel the Jews if they rebel
Christians: Literally genocide Jews any chance they get

Not even close. I just understand the need for cattle corrals.
If religion became as strong as it used to be, I would fake it if I had to.

Downvoted for faith over governmentalized religion. Shocker, that.
