You mean like it used to be? What will happen when nobody remembers that?

Well, it all had the rules of Voat but there were people from every political wing in the same spaces and having discussions.

The one thing I don't like about Voat is that we don't get much engagement from other sides here. I'd love to actually argue the merits of positions in a place where the outcome won't be pre-decided by the mods.

You won't ever get "much engagement" because the voting system suppresses their comments.

I'd love to actually argue

The problem is that the other side doesnt actually want to argue.

They want you to stop talking, otherwise their religion doesnt work.

I don't like about Voat ... we don't get much engagement from other sides

The only way the "other side" is capable of engaging is lies, manipulation and outright censorship.

In general, there is no point in "engaging" with people whose ideology evolves around increasing your taxes and redistributing your wealth to themselves. Arguing with leftists is like "arguing" with Genghis Khan about the amount of tributes you will pay to him to make him stop attacking you. The only type of engagement justified by their stated goals is total war.

There's a lot of other strange privacy issues with power hungry mods as well. Doxing for the sole purpose of blackmailing people seeking medical or relationship help is way too common. A nurse once told me a patient who had a sti that ended up with someone trying to get money from them or tell their girlfriend. He used Reddit and they both got harassed by a nut job mod.

The doors for the walled garden are closing. Alternatives are now needed... Lucky for everyone, this has been expected for decades and several already exist.

Voat isn't wild. It's kind, tame, and inviting. It's a true civil society, where people from all walks of life are able to communicate freely. The Internet as it currently exists is where the real danger exists. Fear not the man who tells you of all that is to be feared; fear the man who tells you that there's nothing to fear. For such a one is like unto a predator quietly stalking; waiting to catch its prey unaware.

And how does that endanger the safety and security of your person? Voat is the safe space. Enforced real world identities is what endangers a person regardless of their beliefs. For there are people who want you dead no matter who you are, no matter how kind and loving you are. There are people who want you to not only die, but to suffer unbearably agonizing torture. They are out there. They are amongst us.

It actually used to be and things really weren't all that bad. But a certain group of individuals wouldn't leave shit well enough alone and every place people would go to escape it, they'd come along and start shit. Now that the pushback is happening, all we hear is cries of "Foul" everywhere.

Yes, and as other's have said - that's how it used to be. The idea that a private company gets control over your freedom if speech is laughable and a slippery slope. Suppose the computer manufacturer decides you can't type certain things on their keyboard. Or a paper manufacturer gets to read your private hand-written letters because they want to protect their company from hate speech. It's all just as ridiculous as what twitter/facebook/youtube is doing.

Would be better without the shitty fucking voting system that breeds hiveminds and censors more opinions than a moderator ever could by hiding them or putting them at the bottom of the page.

I agree, points are stupid.

Interesting note, Ender's Game by Orson card actually predicted that a website just like this would exist. His vision of the internet was honestly almost prophetic, down to us eventually having to use Real ID to go online which is a thing being pushed now. Terrifying that we ignore harbingers.

I can't be certain about that.

While I do enjoy the ability of being able to express myself in a free society (Or at least what the US refers to as a so called "free" society...), The simple fact is that there are other websites based in other countries that would not respect that.

Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Opinion IMO are essential human rights. Having the ability to speak and express yourself freely in any way about any topic is what is the very essence in describing what freedom is. I'd rather be a loud mouthed rebel then a miserable or contempt slave.
