I'd like that for the simple fact my eyes hate staring at white for any long period of time.

First thing I did when joining voat was to turn night-mode on and override sub styles.

Same for me. Night-mode turrned on and sub styles turned off. However I want to clarify that even though the whites are a strain on the eyes for many, I think the emphasis on why to change the basis (standard) theme to dark should be Voat's branding.

Holy shit I've never tried night mode until now. It's so insanely better. I can literally feel my eyes hurting less now.

Yea I think Voat's colors go better with the dark theme too.

I hate staring at too much white too, I get eye fatigue more easily.

I actually think that nightmode is better but in terms of branding, if there were more voat goat appearances throughout the site it would make for a better branding feel. I love the voat goat and the more it appears throughout the site the more it feels like a different place than the land of reddit snoo.

I'd like a gray background instead of a pure white or pure black. Or a nifty gradient slider to pick the right shade between white and black.

I agree. I would upvote your comment but apparently I'm not allowed to because I'm new and only have two contribution point.

You must have misclicked because only downvoating is limited.

Definitely this. Plus the night-mode looks more elegant IMO.

Agreed. I usually dislike dark themed sites and couldnt stand reddits nights mode. I even like the default here, but this is perfect.

I've been trying out the voat apps and they all seem to be set on night mode by default. I really like it!

I tried out boats, and vo browser. Vo's my favorite so far.

personally as a person with depression I like the white background. night mode to me is just too gloomy and it turns me off. night mode definitely has it's place and many people prefer it. but I think it's better to have day mode as default. just my two goats.

I agree. First impression is important, and the night mode would have turned med off.

Really? I guess its a matter of personal preference. Voat was just meh for me, and when I found night mode I was amazed.

Dark colored websites usually feel kind of "shady". I would feel less comfortable viewing a dark tinted website around others or at work.

To me, they just seem retro.

However, when I first started using the web in 1992, I used the Lynx browser. And before that, I was using a VT100 terminal to access Usenet. :-)

So light-colored text on a dark background just reminds me of my youth.

If we put the personal preference discussion aside (you could still change to white mode when logged in), don't you think it would be a good idea to give Voat its own branding?

[–] berzerkrr 4 points 18 points (+22|-4) ago

I don't think a just having a black background would accomplish it's own branding. most websites are white for a reason. I would assume that most people prefer a light background with dark text.

What about something in a nice sepia background with dark brown text?

[–] kittypuppet 2 points -1 points (+1|-2) ago

Hmmm what if there was an option to select what color you want the bg to be?

Obviously, it'd be a dark color when you select "night mode", but maybe it'd help?

So you advocate taking the choice that appeals to idiots over the one that's objectively better? Black on white doesn't make sense for a website. People don't know that, but they can certainly feel it when they're staring at their computers for hours on end. In the long run, being right is worth more than you'd think. Opinions will always change, but the right answer will always have better than average odds of being chosen by popular opinion compared to any given alternative.

Meh, objectively better? What are you basing that on? Quite a stretch, tbh.

Light colours are more appealing than dark colours. It's simple. It's great that we have the option to make it dark if we know it's better for our eyes and want it that way, but the reality is that the light colours are more appealing.

[–] mcstain 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

The default should definitely be white. Staring at a black background with white text is fine until you switch to another website or tab and get an afterimage due to the difference in colours. The default should match the default of the rest of the web which at this point in time is black text on light background. If people want to change to night mode by all means let them, but keep it as an option!

[–] twisted_memories 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Having it light appeals to more people. It's fantastic to have the choice for night mode, but I really think the default should be light.

This is because of Internet history and may change in the future

Sites use black text on white background because they are mimicking actual paper. White text on a black background is objectively easier on one's eyes.

Nope. I think the content and community is what should separate Voat from others, not the looks. Besides, the background colour is the least of our problems if Voat looks too close to Reddit.

There is also the fact that design and colour choice will hold psychological effects on mood, attitude, and behaviour. I would rather have blue and white greet users and attract newcomers, not black.

BLUE
Positive: Intelligence, communication, trust, efficiency, serenity, duty, logic, coolness, reflection, calm.
Negative: Coldness, aloofness, lack of emotion, unfriendliness.

WHITE
Positive: Hygiene, sterility, clarity, purity, cleanness, simplicity, sophistication, efficiency.
Negative: Sterility, coldness, barriers, unfriendliness, elitism.

BLACK
Positive: Sophistication, glamour, security, emotional safety, efficiency, substance.
Negative: Oppression, coldness, menace, heaviness.

EDIT: "isn't the least" changed to "is the least"

I would also prefer a nice blue (maybe not cobalt). I will always choose dark layouts over light layouts, but something about the color scheme of night mode doesn't sit right with me.

[–] antuna 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

The thing I dislike about night mode is that all of the blue accents throughout Voat do not match the buttons that night mode turns red. It just makes it look sloppy and messy. Switching those buttons to the same blue would be nice

You use the same words for the pros and cons of those.

0

[–] ThisisforPosting 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

It's not my list to begin with but I don't really see the problem. What's wrong with using the same words? The colours blue, white, and black can all be associated with coldness and therefore share that same negative trait.

Or are you referring to how a pro is also listed as a con (in this case, sterility)? Sterility can be seen as a pro because it denotes a clean place that is safe to be in. It can also be seen as negative because it can refer to a strictly controlled environment that is cold and detached.

I agree with you entirely.

I am curious, do you think it would be a good idea to have a standard default colour scheme with multiple personal colour options rather than just black?

0

[–] ThisisforPosting 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

I think that Voat should have a standard default and a night mode option. Alternate colours will not work well with Voat's current system of allowing subverses to create their own style. If a subverse has its own style (e.g. custom buttons, banners, background images) then having that universal colour theme that all users share is better than having everyone holding bias towards certain styles to match their personal colour scheme. In the end they can just turn of subverse styles but in some cases (like subs dedicated to arts and designs), styles play a big part in the community so it just makes everything unnecessarily complex.

Mods in each subverse currently has the power to alter certain aspects of their respective sub's design. I think that should be enough as this system allows for the community to decide what the subverse will look like to both users and newcomers. This shared responsibility can lead to a stronger sense of community and identity for the subverse. I see it happen a lot in various sites and forums. People would submit work or hold contests for the website's "banner/background image for the month" and it's always fun looking at and discussing all the awesome work that gets dished out.

I think I'm in the minority here of preferring the white mode over the night mode.

[–] Wiidesire [S] 2 points 1 points (+3|-2) ago

That's not really the question though. You can prefer the white theme, but still think that the dark theme would give Voat a better branding.

[–] RobotOverlord 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

I don't think having a dark background improves branding. Doing so just to be different is not the correct reason. The only good reason to decide between white or dark background is which is more readable and acceptable to the most users. My vote is white.

Yes. It's like having RES built in. So many little things here are making it so much better already.

Agreed. My favorite RES setting is the "Show all images" button. It would be awesome if this could be built into Voat.
