Imprisoning, suing, and murdering people for revenge may sometimes be legal or just, but they always make the world a little worse off.

Wouldn't it deter or actively prevent them from harming others and in cases were this would be a valid concern - make the world better for decent people?

Yes, justice is a net benefit, but it still has the downside of punishment. Your own success has no downside whatsoever.

Deterrence is presumably the main reason why we do it, and clearly a net benefit.
