Well yeah that seems like the only option. The problem is I don't like wondering if my wife will break down somewhere at any second.

I have had good luck with used rental cars. Before you have a knee jerk, "They are driven badly." remember they get regular maintenance and oil changes. When you go on the lot, you will see several cars of the same year and model. They will all have approx the same mileage. I know that this will sound weird but, stay away from the one with the low mileage. It has been in the shop the most and may be a lemon.

Estate sales. You could get a really low mileage car with a lot of life in it.

You can still find low mileage older cars.

A new car can break down too. A well cared for used car should be in the middle of the bathtub curve
