Self sufficiency isnt necessarily a person preparing for the end of the world. Anyone who doesnt practice it is just a lost consumer instead of a producer.

Unless you are a commercial farmer, my garden is better than yours.

A farm isnt considered a garden. I have an orchard, I guess that isnt a garden either. Does a vineyard count as a garden? I only got a little one of those though.

Over all, my land is alright. But there are many people out there that have more. I can easily sustain my family and if I was home full time several other families with my land.

However, I do have access to commercial farms, because I do work with farmers :P

Constantly. I recommend /v/preppers

If you cycle through your stored supplies, most of them are not adding additional cost. Every month or so I will take the oldest food and use it for groceries while replacing it with new stuff. This also helps me get used to how to prepare it and enjoy it, and I know if SHTF I won't be under additional stress due to dietary changes.

I also find that a lot of preppers food is more nutritious and has less crap in it than normal sundries.

I tend to use fresh vegetable in season, and frozen out of season. Canned goods are generally for camping/power outage type situations. I got a bunch of canned goods, rice, lentils, dry beans, pasta, vinegars, olive oil, coconut oil, etc.

Tomorrow is toilet paper, lighters (learned this from reading a Bosnian's feelings on SHTF, was posted here on Voat somewhere), more petrol, a bunch of lumber, and fasteners.

Never considered lumber. What use? I assume you must be rural?

I live in an apartment on a very low budget... I basically have no real supplies; a few gallons of water, a cc pistol and a few hundred rounds. Any tips on prepping for someone that might need to try to just bug out, instead of hunkering down? I know it's already pretty late in the game and I'm pretty fucked anyway by being in a city.

I'm good for 90 days, but I wouldn't say I'm a pepper. I just like being prepared. I love in the desert and there aren't many natural water sources around, so you just hoard water, and dry food.

You are a prepper. It's a spectrum. It's okay to be a prepper.

I'm not a pepper either man, so I stand with you.

I grew up in an era of vodka swilling Soviets who would beat the UN tables with their shoes and scream at us. I've grown up in the cold war and this isn't anything new. I've done been there, done that, got the T-shirt. It's a cliche to me now.

If it happens, it happens. I'll deal with it or not. Live or die. Right now, I'm going to enjoy the modern conveniences and luxuries, appreciating that they can evaporate away in a puff of smoke. Just think what it's going to be like without electricity as we know it? Running water? Groceries? Medicine?

I think it will be like so many things, people get big ideas in their head that something will be glorious and fun, but once in the thick of it, they realize it's hell and sucks and it was a foolish notion.

I have no illusions about it being fun. Other than actually getting to shoot communists. That will be fun.

I remember when that movie came out. I enjoyed it. So many didn't. Some said the book was way better (but don't they always).

I recall it being very gloomy, depressing, and boring. A lot of dark choices to be made without some compelling, flashy narrative. Just shit.

And that is the reality. Post-apocalypse isn't some teen fiction or Michael Bay film. It's desperation, just getting by, and basically the breakdown of most of the things we hold dear culturally right now. It's not useful to say, "Well humans have survived that way before and for thousands and thousands of years." It's about the loss we'd feel now. The relative shock we'd experience as a people from being thrust into a whole different, less optimistic way of life.

The reason you prep is to provide a transition from civilized to uncivilized life. You can bet that those who prep and train have a massive advantage over the normies.

Where I live, we could take out one bridge, and the outside world would need to traverse 100km of bush just to get to us.

So, you make choices now, that aid your survival odds in a SHTF scenario. If you live in a city, you are fucked.

I've generally enough for a couple of months. Beyond that I have a large variety of practiced skills that would be of great value that I can trade upon. And if that fails, banditry here I come.

[–] elitch2 [S] 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

I hope that last is a joke. If you have useful skills being a bandit is the end of the human race.

Prepper = Pro-active

There are outliar wackos and people who let prepping run their lives.

It doesnt take much to become a "prepper". I got into and satisfied the basics of prepping a 5 years ago, 3-months of dry food, 55-gal drum of fresh water and basic survival ancillaries. I am light years ahead of most people even though it doesnt seem like much. This $400 investment spread over a 20-year shelf life is costing me $20 per year. It's a 'life assurance' plan.

Nah, I'm going down with the ship. I'm really hoping to die in a nuclear blast.

What if nukes are a fake and you're stuck in a Bosnia situation? Door to ddor ethnic cleansing sort of shit?

[–] whereisthemountain 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

I've thought about that. It could be slow and agonizing, with great potential for all sorts of nasty situations. Possibly drinking lots of treebark soup. I'm not sure what the solution is, as I'm essentially living check to check right now. Student loans and rent are a bitch.

I know it's not fashionable to talk about dreams, but my most vivid recurring dream (have been having it since young childhood) was witnessing a nuclear blast. It's always at some gathering. I step away from that gathering and go off by myself to do something or collect something. There is a moment where I stop and time slows down, I look off in the distance almost like I know something is coming, and boom. I see it go off. Pure terror. I can't move though. No sound will come out of my mouth when I try yelling for everyone else. I just see it and know its coming. I always wake up before the blast gets to me though.

It seems like a pretty painless way to go, given one is close enough to the center. There's a lot of bases around where I live, lots of drinking water. I imagine the PNW would be a prime target in such a conflict.
