That's a great question. I've got a couple of what I think are unique sociopolitical ideas...
1.) MALE PARENTAL RIGHTS.....
Normally, when a man impregnates a woman and she gives birth to the child, the man is obligated to pay child support to the woman. Failure to do so CAN lead to fines and jail time. Wage attachment is fairly common in these cases too.
A separate but related issue is the man's right as a parent to care for or at least visit the child. Scenarios range from the man remaining in the family household to 50/50 custody to alternating weekends to 1 weekend a month, and finally short visits under supervision and zero visitation. Technically, the woman is subject to these scenarios as well.
Often I hear of a parent that is intensely opposed to the other parent having any access to a child, or they have difficulty sharing custody. At the SAME TIME I hear parents arguing the support payments they receive are only fair and usually not enough.
I'll mention briefly here something not often considered. Parental rights also means parental responsibility and liability.
UNIQUE PROPOSED OPTION.....
I was thinking that, isn't their a simpler resolution on the table that should at least be an option? A man (not a woman) who doesn't wish to pay any child support for the child he abandoned or had little involvement with could be granted his wish. However, it would require him to sign away all of his parental rights and lose the ability to recover them or gain custody of the child in the future.
Some may think, big deal. Dude has no interest in being a dad so he would get of Scott free and the woman would be screwed out of any support payments.
But, that view doesn't factor in the value of the family unit and of fatherhood. And there are other benefits to being a father in essence and in the law.
I got more if I'm not dubbed Mr. Obvious for this one.
