I think it's spot on to be honest, it's the nature of working in groups. Maybe /v/gaming has some particularly opinionated people, I don't know I haven't spent any time there.
If you think that the community of a particular subverse is beyond repair you can always start your own. It's possible that others feel the same way and that there is a popular need for an alternative, in your example a gaming subverse that attempts to be more down to earth. We change what we can, recognize what we can't, and take the action that has the highest potential for impact. For my part if I were looking to join a gaming subreddit I would appreciate one that is accessible, heck I'd even join yours.
