I think the majority reading this post are misinterpreting what I'm saying. The upvote/downvote system is fine as is, nothing wrong with it. The rewards on your account of 'karma' are what I feel holds the community back. It's fake internet points. It does nothing but encourage you to create something that will be universally approved of, thus reducing any different posts. It's sort of a loop.

You want karma, so you make a post to get the karma knowing only a certain kind of post gets widespread approval. The only reason they get widespread approval is because everyone wants karma...etc. Keep the up and downvotes. Rid ourselves of the karma game. Why not just see what it could look like?

Well, aside from it being about "internet points", it is also a way to identify members who have a reputation within the community. I'm not sure there's a right or a wrong way to go about it. If points are really the objective, in theory that would drive more content, which is the purpose of the site. It is up to the userbase to determine what is quality content and what isn't.
