Before metrication, different countries had their own interpretations of measurements. A mile in one country could be vastly different to a mile just across the border in the next country. A "scandinavian" mile is about 11 thousand yards. Even if there are a couple of refuseniks still out there enough of the world succeeded in dumping the out of date measuring systems to remove the ambiguity.

still some differences, gallons in US and UK for example not same. pints also different.
