supposedly imperial had advantages because it was easier to do sums in your head and divide into fractions quickly. it was better for buying and selling, shops etc. the fraction used are actually easier in some ways (I'm not sure how this works exactly, but for people who defend it, that's their argument)
the thinking behind fahrenheit is to avoid having to deal with minus numbers I think, that's why freezing is so high
Before metrication, different countries had their own interpretations of measurements. A mile in one country could be vastly different to a mile just across the border in the next country. A "scandinavian" mile is about 11 thousand yards. Even if there are a couple of refuseniks still out there enough of the world succeeded in dumping the out of date measuring systems to remove the ambiguity.

still some differences, gallons in US and UK for example not same. pints also different.

1 liter = 1 cubic decimeter
1 cubic meter would be 1000 liters, and 1000 kg
