Honestly, being insulted in real life by people around me has always had a bigger impact on me. When someone insults me online, then I always think that 1. They don't really know me and therefore what they say is not a reflection of who I am and 2. They are just some random person who probably had a bad day or just really likes insulting people.

Also, the anonymity of the internet tends to reduce peoples barriers in a way. We are much quicker to say lots of things we would not say to someones face because we can't see them or have to live with the consequences of insulting someone in real life.
