Pretty sure she can leverage her current position into something more lucrative than a mod on voat

[–] paniks 0 points 57 points (+57|-0) ago

It is not about money, it is about showing that people care for her and appreciate all the work she has done. Being a mod would be different from working for voat, as she did with reddit, so she do that and have a job at the same time. She wouldn't be as involved as she used to be, but she would be still an important part of the community. A community that cares about here.

She already has a community that cares about her, it's called reddit and they shut down their site for her...

This is completely asinine.

"Here Victoria, have a modship. It's something you never asked for and you don't get paid for being one yet you need to be active in your freetime! You can have the powers to edit and control this subverse! Did I mention you still have to find another job?"

Why is this even a discussion? This is a random person who we only know through iAmA at reddit. It sucks that she lost her job but why are we trying to assign her something she didn't even ask for? Leave the modship to people who actually want it and who can actually improve the subverse.

It's easy to say that it's not about money and other idealistic stuff when it's stuff when it's someone else's money, time, and career you're talking about.

Mods don't make any money at all...

The position could even be honorary. Nobody's imagining that Voat is gonna pay her salary and shit, lol.

[–] second_mouse 0 points 10 points (+10|-0) ago

Actually, Voat doesn't have to pay her a salary. She could be hired as agent/assistant/liaison by the celebrity's PR team for AMAs and receive a fee for her services. Meanwhile, she is a trusted voice who people recognize so she would "legitimize" the celebrity doing the AMA.

We should do a kickstarter to hire Victoria to run IAMAs on Voat. Shes got all the good contacts and seriously having a q&a with people like Obama is the best advertising a site could want.

Edit: although more traffic is the last thing Voat needs at the moment

I think she deserves a rest period. Being a mod is not easy. But it could also signal to her that her work is really appreciated, boost her self confidence again.

[–] Electric_Goat 0 points 32 points (+32|-0) ago

She wasn't really a Mod though. She was a high level PR employee. I'm sure she was well paid for her work. Liasing with politicians and celebrities isn't a skill the average moderator has

We should throw a giant party for her.

We could have an Ellen Pao piñata.

After reddit, the 4th most visited website in the world, showed her such love and appreciation, combined with her having experience with thousands of celebs, AND her obvious talent and skills... Victoria is probably taking a vacation in Malibu, watching as her gmail account fills with job offers.

And she deserves it.

I don't think her confidence is low right now. :)

[–] Green_Bay_Packers 3 points 23 points (+26|-3) ago  (edited ago)

Why would you want her? She's just a marketing shill. She was all about getting celebrities on reddit and planting predetermined questions and answers to make it seem like community involvement in order to advertise the latest movie/product/campaign etc.

Stuff that, voat is about freedom of speech, not capitalist marketing.

Edit: looks like the reddit crowd has arrived, people didnt get downvoated due to disagreement before the last wave of new users.

You're right. Everyone's crying over her departure but her AMAs were PR fuelled handjobs. Obama did 10qs from his fucking hooplehead employees. It won't matter. Voat is about reality not some pr wet dream.

Be vigilant in upholding our upvotes meaning more than agree and disagree. I always hated that in reddit. We must help the new users understand.

Why would anyone agree to do an AMA if all of the questions will be hostile & disrespectful? There needs to be some sort of balance. I'm not sure if all of the questions were pre-determined or screened, but not everything is black and white.

1
3

[–] Sagittary 1 points 3 points (+4|-1) ago

No matter how good her contacts are, not many people are going to do an AMA for a website as small as Voat currently is, we'll have to consume a lot of Reddit's share of users before that happens.

[–] Chris_E 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

AMA was one of the main pulls for Reddit. If Voat was able to hire Victoria she would be able to pull in some small to medium celebrities immediately, even with the site being relatively small... she would probably even leverage that into a good thing, saying the celebrities were showing they were cutting edge. Those AMAs would pull in more users. The cycle would continue with bigger and bigger pull.

But even if Voat could hire her, which would obviously be good PR, the question is how good would it be for the community.

IAMA and AMA are registered trademarks of reddit and co. lawsuit in 3.2.1.0

AMA's aren't all marketing. In fact, the most recent one before she was fired was a preacher who wasn't selling anything in particular.

AMA's exist because people want to ask questions to those who have perspectives considered interesting. Naturally, this will include many celebrities (although yes the interest is too skewed towards celebrities on Reddit.)

The first lart is understandable, but how is she disgusting? Having never heard of the woman until the other day, I don't know much about her, but that doesn't sound justified.

Can't speak for the parent, but this went down recently. (Victoria accused of having AMA participants lie about deleted softball questions, she denies it.)

She is also an outspoken SJW.

Really? I didn't know that. Then why did none of the sjw subs speak up about the firing? On the contrary, I felt like they celebrated her leaving. But maybe they're just edgy...

I agree but at the same time you have to understand where people are coming from. All the reddit crowd is now showing up here and what they think they want is reddit minus the drama. Until the differences become apparent expect people to act like this is reddit 2.0

0

[–] Loreguy 0 points 9 points (+9|-0) ago

People have to stop trying to compare this site to Reddit (not going to happen, I know). For Voat to succeed it has to become independent of Reddit, it has to form it's new image and its base community. When Reddit started it was a group of programmers, geeks, and generally tech savvy people. That was their image and they built upon it. If Voat's initial image is Reddit 2.0 I don't know how much growth or individuation it'll achieve. It might become 9gag 2.0, or Buzzfeed 2.0 if we're not careful.

The ideal thing to do would be to not even mention Reddit, or Pao, or Victoria so that Voat users and by extension Voat can come up with their/its own identity.

Serious question, how can we be so sure Voat is not going to end as Reddit in the next few years?

0
2

[–] tacowhisperer 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Assuming that the following will never change (or will change within a reasonable tolerance), there are a few key differences with the first being that Voat is currently more transparent than Reddit when it comes to communication between the admins and the users, the second being that they promised that as long as the content is not illegal to hold on the software, there will be no censoring, and the third being that users are highly encouraged to have more discussion rather than circle-jerks. Thankfully, there are limits placed on the downvote button in order to eliminate downvote trains seen on Reddit.

You can't be sure. It will most likely happen. But there is no need to speed it along by simply importing everyone from reddit.

I agree. AMA's on reddit used to be great 4-5 years ago when they were just normal people who had interesting jobs or secrets to tell about regular jobs. Victoria ruined the AMA subreddit for me. I guess most redditors weren't around back then so they don't know what it used to be like before the professional public relations agents took over.

It was a lot like the show The Directors where it's an inside look at a person's life without any filters or pr shit. Raw. That's the way it'll be here.

[–] Madcore 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

Yeah I remember the guy who sold his used socks, and the prostitute AMA was also interesting. Now it's all just celebrities.

I agree 100%. What I am sincerely hoping is that Voat does not incorporate any "experienced" mods that have experience modding 1000+ subreddits just because they have experience.

[–] sergeantslate 0 points 8 points (+8|-0) ago

Absolutely not. AMAs on reddit were nothing but marketing ploys and that is something I want to avoid for Voat

It might not be in her best interest as a career path, but boy would she be getting back at Reddit! haha It would be worth it just for fun in my opinion!

[–] Andthenameis 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

Sadly that would probably ruin her career if she then wanted to move on from voat. What company will hire an individual that does something out of spite the moment they let them go?
