Constant pun threads and shitty memes. Voat is what Reddit should have been - a place for intelligent discussion.

To be fair some of the most profound and intelligent things I've ever read has been from Reddit users. But that was years ago before low effort fluff clogged it all up. Hopefully we can keep that stuff out and focus more on substance.

Of course now I can't find it but there was a reddit post about the average comment length over the years and per subreddit. The most interesting thing was that overall the length of the comments went down, which just means that mid-long comments about opinions and explanations were getting replaced by short memes and jokes, also even though the long comments might have had more upvotes in the end the joke comments were more 'economical' just because making a joke takes maybe 1 minute and gets 500 upvotes while a long comment could take up to 1 hour to write up and 'only' getting 1000 votes.

That's still true but only for the small subs but personally I have found more intelligent discussions in topic-specific forums.

I can understand your stance on the memes, but puns are fun. They sustain me. It adds flavor to an alphabet soup of ones and zeros.

For me, puns just detract from the quality of the conversation.

Funny puns are fun. Shitheads trying to be funny for karma is not.

I think sometimes Reddit skips the alphabet soup altogether and licks the flavor packet.

I agree, even when the average pun thread felt like beating a dead horse, it was easy enough to minimize it, and get to the actual discussion. And when people pulled it off well, it was good for a laugh before I minimized it and got to the actual discussion, heh

I think part of the problems with Reddit as of late stem from the growth. Intelligent discussion, while still there, was diluted by casual users and 14 year olds. I hope this can be a small enough community that we can be what Reddit used to be.

Popularity in a site is detrimental to its intelligence.

I agree, which is why we have to fight to maintain a high standard here as it looks like we will continue to grow. I think Voat has some features that will help though, like the Voating limits, mod limits, emphasis on free speech, etc.

Well, I dont mind joking around and not being serious, but reddit was completely infested with this specific kind of lame jokeyness. The serious replies to serious questions got slowly lower down in the comments section until they werent there at all.

I dont know if reddit changed, or I did.

Oh yeah, I'm not a complete hardass and I enjoy the occasional joke I see in the comments but like you say, Reddit is just saturated with it and it pisses me off.
