Going cold turkey the withdrawals can kill a full blown alcoholic. They need medical help when they stop drinking. No deaths have ever been recorded of a healthy adult during opiate withdrawals. The only deaths during opiate withdrawals have been people with underlying health problems such as heart problems, etc. Opiate addicts build up a tolerance for the opiods. People often OD when they have been off opiods for a while and then start back doing them. They tend to jump back in doing same size doses as those they were using when they stopped. They no longer have the same level of tolerance and they OD.
