I just pulled a 24 25 hour stint working on Voat. Five hours before this run I was up 48+ hours with no sleep. It is a wee bit disheartening to arrive here and see topics like this. (But hey, we are an open community so it's to be expected)

@Atko and I share a common ideal: that a free community is necessary for the success of mankind. We intend on accomplishing this with Voat. You can doubt us now, but we will prove it to you going forward.

Stay tuned. ;)

Transparency is key, man. You can't say something like that to a community that is here precisely for that reason and not expect questions. Great job though, keep it up!

they prob dont want to just say names and stuff they say what they can atm after there will be a deal or stuff of that kind we should ask for it but right now they cant do too much

This is the second time today I wrote a lengthy comment and poof! (talk about disheartening eh?) I will try my best to keep it short this time:

First of all thank you! For all you have done! You deserve a nice sleep. I run a website myself and at times of downtime I know it gets VERY stressful. So, I wish you a quite sleep very soon.

What I don't understand is why you called this "disheartening". This is a legitimate question that should be asked in an open forum which aims to have transparency. If you get upset by these kinds of questions you're going to have a rough time managing the community.

In my OP, I tried to be as fair as I could, leaving prejudice and judgment behind. If I came off as judgmental I am sorry, that was not my intention.

I've loved Voat so far. I hope that instead of meaningless drama, I can enjoy an open discussion without being silenced like I was on Reddit.

Thank you :)

He's just tired and has been wading through 2 billion "WTF WAREZ VOATS?! LoL" posts.

Its a tough place to be in, watching your baby choke and die and then spending every ounce of yourself trying to get her back to life only to be hit with a barrage of "WTF VOAT!?!" type posts.

I know thats not what you are saying here, but to a tired worn out tech it kind of falls into the same ballpark.

Just like the Fattening, things will smooth out with time.

We appreciate the work. I don't think this post is negative. It's just expressing a concern and curiosity over changes in the business end of the site. People are naturally curious regarding what (if any) changes that will bring to the user end of the site.

Yeah, you are right. But I gave money to voat and after a few hours I get this message(about venture capital firms). I feel super bad as well, like I just wasted my money for nothing.

I've posted this in a few others places, but I'm going to keep trumpeting it because I think it's a great idea. Voat should look into equity-based crowd-funding to get their seed capital, rather than dealing with a VC firm, for this EXACT reason. You can't ask your community to donate their money to get the site going, and then take money from a VC firm. That's unfair to the community because:

  1. Why should a VC firm get a stake in the company/chance to get a return on their investment, when all the community gets is a pat on the back?

  2. How is this going to be any different from Reddit? "Trust us" doesn't really mean much because you haven't been around long. How do we know that a VC firm won't come in with their own agenda and begin controlling the message again? On the other hand, if the community owns (in a highly-distributed way) a huge chunk of Voat, it will be much more difficult for that to happen.

Here's a good write-up about equity-based crowd-funding for startups: http://earlyinvesting.com/equity-crowdfunding-jobs-act-regulation-a-plus/

I highly suggest the Voat team look into this, or the community will always carry a distrustful feeling of what's happening in the background, and that's not healthy for anyone.

We did not close any deals yet so there are no investors to name. As soon as we have something concrete - we will be open about it.

If voat could live on donations only, I would not be responding to VCs. If we close a deal, we will stand by our word and have VCs sign documents which force them to uphold Voat philosophy and how Voat is operated.

As far as equity goes - I and Puttitout have agreed to keep majority of the company for many years to come in order to ensure Voat stays the same - with no censorship and no meddling policy as long as content is legal.

Whoever donated and feels betrayed - please send an email to hello@voat.co and attach proof of your donation and I will make sure you get your money back.

I have always been transparent and I'll continue to do so. This question is legitimate and I'm not mad. You guys have been through a lot at that other place and you have every right to be skeptical and to question things.

Why don't you try one last fund drive to see if the new, larger user base is willing/able to support voat with donations. If given a choice between donating or worrying about the interests of private investors, I think alot of people will donate. At least give them a chance.

[–] brainbaobao 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

The problem is that they need a sustainable and stable source of revenue. One round of donations ain't gonna do that.

If they did something like a twitch subscription that'd be a possibility

Once again, I'm completely baffled... how the hell isn't this the standard for internet communities!?

I mean, this transparency, accountability, connection with the community... it's refreshing!

Seriously, after getting used to the classic "tree house club" moderation styles, disconnected administrative crew and some times even disdain towards the community, Atko and PuttItOut are putting to shame nearly every single community I have ever seen.

Anyway, thanks for the hard work gentlemen, I wish you the best of lucks.

I can't believe they would talk to investors at a time like this, when everyone at Reddit is complaining about investors ruining Reddit. Sure it will make it easier to get servers going, but people want voat to be a platform that cares about their users, not investors. This feels to me like atko is betraying us.

Atko doesn't owe us anything. That doesn't change the fact that he has lead us to believe for months that voat would be run by community donations and would listen to its users. I feel betrayed not because he owes us anything, but because he said he is going back on his promises.

[–] myusernameranoutofsp 0 points 1 point (+1|-0) ago

You can say the same thing about reddit though, that they don't have unlimited resources and that they don't owe the users anything. If you accept that as a justification for Voat monetising then reddit is clear too.

This is pretty much how I view the situation. With recent events bringing extremely high traffic over to these servers, something needs to be done to maintain the load. Wanting to rely entirely on community donations is great but it also seems fairly unrealistic at this stage.

I would hold on to judgment until he posts a public announcement or answer the worries. But like many others, this kind of news from Atko raised my eyebrows.

Betraying may be a bit harsh, but foolish maybe. It is classic for a firm to come in a save a struggling company in a time of stress. But that aid classically comes with a lot of strings attached. I hope atko didn't commit to anything long term. There certainly needs to be clarity on how we are moving forward.

All the shitty reddit users are doing that anyway... it's not like that place wasn't a shithole BECAUSE OF THE USERS before Pao came along. Now they're here.. and we get to see the same stupid shit that ruined reddit.

Music is already covered in the most obvious shit.. Pixies and Talking Heads??!! Who would have fucking guessed!!... Everything else is going to follow the same pattern and I'M PISSED about it. I've been here for 6 months and after flirting with Hubski for a bit I decided to go with Voat... mostly because it wasn't reddit and Hubski suuuuucksss. Now this that this place is over-run with reddit scum, I'm not sure how it's any different. It's like a bunch of shitty immigrants bringing their shitty culture with them.... if you liked that shit so much, stay where you are.

ALSO: the news of the investors is a bit of a double-edged sword. That alone might mean it's time to move on. This place was compromised way too fast. Waves of redditors PLUS venture capitalists is more than any site can withstand.

My new pet name for the mass migration of redditors: Snowstormfront

[–] jasius 2 points 16 points (+18|-2) ago

If we weren't all redditors at one point then how would we have latched onto this style of site so quickly, or understood how it all works? Don't hate immigrants and be a xenophobe/voat hipster(I liked it before the Reddit exodus), sites will expand and grow, for better or worse, thats the nature of these type of sites, just get used to it.

[–] k3ksninja 1 point 9 points (+10|-1) ago

i reckon the main problem with reddit was censoring. By censoring all the independent, critical information, the place became another MSM jerkaround.

I've only been here for a month but feel the same way. Fight the good fight. Encourage maturity and civility. The summer will be over soon enough. Once the kids go back to school I think it will all settle down.

Wow, you really have a problem with people from reddit ( stilll can't understand why) Thank God im free to roam to everywhere i want to go in the internet.

In my case, im just here for curiosity. If I like it here, fine, ill stay, and i wont go back to reddit. And at the moment, this seems like a cool website with cool people, with interesting content. I'm glad i moved to Voat!
