I hope there aren't rumors of a reboot. It's one of those rare greats that hasn't been raped by a greedy studio looking for a quick buck from nostalgia.

Two ways to think of this.
For the original audience those movies were fairly compelling at least given by the revenues.
For the current audience those movies are a remarkably interesting glimpse into the worldview of the 1980s.
The specific years are largely irrelevant as the notion of far future wasn't as interesting at the time to the audience.
I don't think it would make much difference. The reason the movies were fun was the interactions of the characters, meeting parents as peers, children, etc. The stories should play well with any time period.

The times were not the interesting part of the film.
