We don't know. We can trace the history of our universe back towards the Big Bang, but it is currently impossible to know what was going before it. We know that a massive amount of energy got released really fast, the energy turned into plasma, the plasma spread out and turned into stable atoms, and then the universe kept spreading out beyond that. Again, if you or anyone you know can figure it out there's a Nobel prize for physics in it for you, but a lot of top minds are pretty sure we can't know. We just measure the aftereffects.
