It doesn't have to extend to them, but people, who do have at least a tinsy amount of empathy for all living creatures that can feel pain, will likely view you as a monster if you literally feel nothing for them. That's pretty much the only disadvantage, unless you want to be viewed as a monster by many people. I'm not saying that it should determine whether people view you as a monster, but that's just the way it is.

There are living creatures that you do not even know exist. I hope you feel bad when they die because if you don't then you are a monster.

Do they have a central nervous system? If they don't (like plants), then they don't feel any pain. Vertebrate animals, on the other hand, can feel pain and suffering.

Are you an edgy teenager who believes that behaving like a psychopath makes you cool? Lacking empathy is the main characteristic of psychopathy.

I do feel a little bit bad knowing that they suffer at times and some of them experience horrible deaths... because I'm not a monster.
